Adding value - through Friction Stir Welding Panels that are joined by FSW instead of traditional fusion welding are: – flatter, – straighter and – stronger This Sapa panel measures 3 x 14.3 metres A rotating tool is pressed into the metal and traverses along the joint. No filler metal or shielding gas is required. The FSW process takes place at a temperature below the melting point of the metal. The result is very little thermal deformation – flat surfaces. Adding value - through hydroforming Product example: Side beam for space frame The result: – Extremely high dimensional accuracy and – precisely the geometry required by the product and production. 1. We start with an extruded aluminium tube. 2. The tube is then bent under a tensile load. 3. The finished part. Compared with a conventional steel and sheet metal body, this aluminium body enables a weight saving of around 50 per cent. Changes in cross-section to provide clearance in confined areas.
