6. Sam's mom served him his plate. On it was a
tuna fish sandwich, carrots, and an apple. To
drink, Sam got a carton of milk.
7. "No!" Sam said.
"I want pizza
and a soda
instead."
Pizza contains cheese, salt,
and/or fatty meat. These
ingredients can increase your
risk for heart disease.
8. "But Sam," his mom replied. "Don't you want to eat your
sandwich? You know, horses eat grain to make them
strong. Bread is made of grain."
You should eat whole wheat
bread because it has the
most fiber.
9. "I can eat like a horse," said Sam as he ate his
bread. "Chomp chomp."
Kids should eat four to six
servings of grain a day. One
slice of bread is an example
of a serving.
10. "And did you know bears catch
tuna with their paws?" Sam's
mom said. "I bet you can't do
that with your tuna."
Lean meat, like chicken and
fish, is healthier than red
meat, like beef and pork.
11. "I can eat my tuna like a bear," said Sam. "Roar!"
Meat is a good source of
protein, which builds muscles.
12. "Rabbits nibble on their carrots
with their teeth," said Sam's
mom. "I wonder if you can do
that?"
Vegetables come in all
different colors - not just
green. They all have different
nutrients that keep you
healthy.
13. "I can!" said Sam, nibbling his carrot.
Most vegetables are
naturally low in fat and
calories.
14. "Did you know that pigs like
apples?" asked Sam's mom.
Most fruits are portable,
which means you can take
them with you wherever you
go, and are low in calories.
15. "Not more than I do!"
replied Sam, taking a bite
out of his apple.
Bananas, cherries,
strawberries, grapes,
oranges, peaches, and
pears are some more
examples of fruits you can
eat!
16. "What animal drinks milk?"
asked Sam's mom.
Milk is a type of dairy product.
Other dairy products you should
eat are low fat yogurt and low
fat cheese.
17. "Hm…a kitten does!" said
Sam. "And look I can slurp my
milk like a kitten!"
Drink 2 to 3 cups of milk a day.
19. "I did!" said Sam in surprise. "Just like the animals finish
theirs."
