Fortunately, I came across countless research studies about gratitude. How it reduced anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, and even suicidal thoughts, while boosting happiness and satisfaction with life. How it lowered blood pressure, boosted immunity, and encouraged healthy habits while improving sleep.
Research even suggested that gratitude improved the quality of romance and marriage! Now that seemed like an irresistible offer.
I started collecting practical tips for living in a more grateful way, and started trying them out. Warning: these ways of practicing gratitude could seriously damage your unhappiness!

I developed this plan as a class assignment. I chose Khloe Kardashian as my client, and I created this strategy to increase the amount of subscribers on her app and her followers on Instagram and Twitter.

Thoughts on Workplace Popcorn (1/2 page | 73 words)
While not illegal, it is unconscionably unethical for one to pop a fresh bag of
popcorn when near a large group of people who are unable to make their own or
partake in its consumption. The wafting of the popcorn's deliciousness causes
immediate salivation and longing among the masses, which constitutes cruel and
unusual maltreatment by an individual towards their fellow man to generate such
reactions without also providing an avenue of relief.
No Step Here (1/2 page | 117 words)
I was blessed to be raised by a man who truly loved me and chose to raise me
as his own, even though it was not required of him. He removed the ‘step’ in our
relationship before it even had a chance to be built, and removed it so effectively that
we have sat and argued with many people who refuse to believe we are not biological
father and son. It takes a very special man to accomplish such a feat, and he is one of
the greatest blessings in my life. Happy Father’s Day to Eddie Shepherd, Jr., and to all
fathers and father figures who treat their role with as much reverence as he does.
Aunt Lillian’s Freedom (1 page | 231 words)
My 83-year-old Aunt Lillian passed away tonight around 10:30. Well before I
grew up to become The Dark Knight, I was her sidekick. Her road dawg. Throughout my
childhood, I went everywhere with her. She brought me along for train rides, the
Children's Museum, ballets, orchestra concerts, fairs, random road trips, and food
deliveries to shut-ins during the holidays. We raced tornadic weather, got lost in the
freezing cold in downtown Indy, played word games while on the road, and she kept me
supplied with joke books and laughed at every single one of them like they were the
greatest thing in the world. We did it all. She played a major part in instilling my love for
reading, art, music, and being curious about the world and the people in it. To this day,
she is the most active person I have ever known. Though I am sad that she will never
get the chance to meet my future family, I am honored to have been chosen to be her
Crazy Kid, and I am relieved that her 7 1/2-year confinement in a body that no longer
agreed with her is now over. She is free once again, and I am thankful for that. I will
always love you Aunt Lillian, and thank you for helping me become who I am today. I
promise to get even better.
The Class of Lillian Miller (1.5 pages| 363 words)
We believe that Titans are not supposed to die. Even knowing the inevitable
outcome of all life, we are still jarred when one succumbs to the end that awaits
everyone. Make no mistake; the beautiful woman we celebrate today was truly a Titan.
To sum up Aunt Lillian’s life would take a lifetime, and to express what she meant to my
family and I would take even longer. Seeing as I only have a few minutes, I will not
attempt to do so, as it would belittle her legacy. Instead, I want to share the most
important and impactful lesson she taught to those who paid attention. You had to pay
attention, because it was not a lesson she told you. She did not write it down or teach a
2. course about it. She showed it through how she chose to live her life. The lesson was
simple, yet powerful: If you can, do.
Time and time again, Aunt Lillian gave of herself. She gave her time, her money
and possessions, her body, and most importantly, her joyful spirit. The only time I ever
saw her show reluctance to participate in anything was when she expected others to
step to the plate and take on a leadership role. It was not because she was tired of
heading committees or running events; it was her belief that many should experience
the delight of serving others. She did not live for empty recognition. She was not
looking for trophies and accolades. She lived to serve others, and took great
satisfaction in doing do. If we are to honor her properly, we need to adopt her spirit of
service and dedicate ourselves to elevating others. Be willing to do for others without
the expectation of reciprocation. If you can, do.
Lillian Miller the Titan has fallen; however, Lillian Miller the Child of God and her
indomitable spirit live on. Her spirit of kindness and service is available to any and all
who desire to possess it. Her class is now dismissed. I hope all who knew her learned
the lesson she spent a lifetime imparting to us, and choose to apply it in our own lives.
