Oglethorpe University Receives National
Recognition for Community Service, Named to
2012 President’s Honor Roll

–
For
the
seventh
year
in
a
row,
Oglethorpe
University
has
been
named
to
the
President’s
Higher
Education
Community
Service
Honor
Roll,
the
highest
federal
recognition
a
college
or
university
can
receive
for
its
commitment
to
volunteering,
service-‐
learning
and
civic
engagement.
OU
is
the
only
school
in
Georgia
to
make
the
general
honor
roll
seven
years
in
a
row.
The
Corporation
for
National
and
Community
Service,
which
administers
the
annual
Honor
Roll
award,
recognized
colleges
and
universities
across
the
country
for
their
impact
on
issues
from
literacy
and
neighborhood
revitalization
to
supporting
at-‐risk
youth.
The
Corporation
oversees
the
Honor
Roll
in
collaboration
with
the
Department
of
Education,
the
Department
of
Housing
and
Urban
Development,
Campus
Compact
and
the
American
Council
on
Education.

Honorees
are
chosen
based
on
a
series
of
selection
factors,
including
the
scope
and
innovation
of
service
projects,
the
extent
to
which
service-‐
learning
is
embedded
in
the
curriculum,
the
school’s
commitment
to
2. long-‐term
campus-‐community
partnerships,
and
measurable
community
outcomes
as
a
result
of
the
service.
At
Oglethorpe,
the
OU
Center
for
Civic
Engagement
takes
the
lead
in
community
service
initiatives
that
include
student,
faculty,
and
staff
volunteers.
The
Center
focuses
on
four
key
areas
of
service:
education,
environment,
health
and
wellness,
and
homelessness
and
hunger.
During
the
2011-‐2012
academic
year:
• 611
students
engaged
in
community
service
through
OU’s
Center
for
Civic
Engagement
• 72
volunteer
projects
were
completed
and
9,801
volunteer
hours
were
contributed
through
CCE
projects
and
programs
• 9
Civic
Engagement
dialogues
were
hosted
for
students
to
participate
in
The
President's
Higher
Education
Community
Service
Honor
Roll
honors
the
nation’s
leading
higher
education
institutions
and
their
students,
faculty
and
staff
for
their
commitment
to
bettering
their
communities
through
service.
These
are
institutions
that
reflect
the
values
of
exemplary
community
service
and
achieve
meaningful
outcomes
in
their
communities.
The
Corporation
for
National
and
Community
Service

federal

engages

than
five
million
Americans

service
through
Senior
Corps,
AmeriCorps,
the
Social
Innovation

and
