Dr. Narendra Kumar Yadav
MBBS, MD (Community Medicine)
What is salt fortification?
vSalt fortification is the process of adding micronutrients (iodine, iron
etc.) in the common salt to prevent the deficiency of iodine and iron.
Ex:
vIodized salt
vDouble fortified/Twin fortified salt
What is salt iodisation?
v Salt iodisation is the process of adding iodine (potassium or sodium
iodide) in common salt for the prevention and control of endemic goiter.
v Aim of iodisation: Prevention and control of endemic goiter.
v Level of iodisation in salt:
1.Production level: 30 ppm
2. Consumer level: 15 ppm
.
Hazards of iodisation:
v Thyrotoxicosis
v Hashimotos Disease
What is “Double fortified/Twin fortified salt(DFS/TFS)”?
vDFS/TFS contains: Iodine & Iron
vDFS/TFS provide: 40 mcg iodine & 1 mg Iron/gm of salt
vAim of double fortification: Prevention and control of endemic
goiter and IDA
