Highlights
The Arya A1+ comes out as another entrant in the low-cost smartphone market, which will
woo you with its sharp & edgy looks and its features. A better battery back-up and an
improved camera could have added to the charm.
• Good Looks • Mediocre Camera
• Prudent Performer • Poor Battery life
Introduction
Salora is out again in the smartphone market with its latest budget Android device,
Arya A1+. The firm adds another feather to its cap by launching this pocket-friendly
device with simple looks and prudent performance. The low-end phone market is
already spurring on to the next level and has been the talk of the town this year. And
here is another affordable member that jumps into the bandwagon.
The looks of any phone are of prime importance to anyone who wishes to own a new
device and Salora has sure paid some attention to it. The device is all plasticky with
chrome plating on the rim and a red velvety back panel that is detachable. There are
other two panels in black and white colour options The form factor of Arya A1+ is
perfect for even small palms. It is easy to hold with a proper grip. The front side
consists of the display, three touch capacitive keys, a front camera and
speakerphone for taking calls. The microUSB and a 3.5-mm jack has been placed on
the top, volume buttons sit on the left edge and the power button at right.
On the back side, the smartphone integrates a camera on the top centre and an LED
flash right below it. The speakers are located down below the flap. Under the panel
are removable battery, dual SIM slots and a MicroSD card slot. Coming at a price
point of Rs 5,499, the device may not outshine its counterparts, but we do give it a
head start in the looks department.
Display and Camera
Salora Arya A1+ features a 4.5-inch IPS OGS display with a screen resolution of
960x540 pixels. The device is aptly sized with its average sized screen, which is also
a bit on the mean side and offers what you pay for. The brightness levels seem good
and so does the clarity, but detailing is not 100 percent better and is just about fine.
A picture seen on some other quality display offers a better a better detailing and
colour reproduction than the same image seen on Arya A1+. The difference is
however very minute, but the comparison is visible as the colours appear on the soft
side in other low end devices and a bit on the shrill side on Arya A1+.
The viewing angles on the smartphone are pretty okayish and so is its visibility under
the scorching sunlight.
Then comes the camera which is another essential part of any smartphone these
days. The Arya A1+ incorporates a 5-megapixel camera at the rear end, which
performs good enough in daylight but falls short in low light conditions.
The picture quality of an image that one captures through its lens is not that great as
the detailing goes for a stroll, the colours however appear fine if not their usual bright
self. But if we look at the price point, one cannot expect a flagship like picture quality
and can feel contended with its camera performance.
Software and UI
Salora has used Google’s Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS in its latest smartphone, Arya
A1+, but with a pinch of its own touch. The UI is mostly stock Android, which a bit
twisted by Salora in order to give its users a different experience. There are no such
remarkable changes except that the icons look a tad bit different or we should rather
say small.
That apart, the UI supports gesture controls like ‘tap to wake’, ‘wave on screen to
answer a call’ and much more. Also, it has intuitive widgets to reach out to your
favourite applications in an instant.
Hardware, Performance and Battery Life
The new Arya A1+ if packed with some reasonable hardware. It comes powered by a
1.3GHz quad-core processor based on Mediatek MT6582 Soc and is further coupled
with a MaLi -400 GPU and 1GB of RAM to provide its users with a pleasant
experience.
Additionally, the smartphone comes equipped with 8GB of internal storage that is
expandable using a MicroSD card, dual SIM capability and multiple connectivity
options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 2G and 3G.
Its quad-core processor ensures lag free and swift performance, however we did
notice a few minute glitches once in a while, while sliding screens and swapping
apps. On the other hand, MaLi- 400 GPU and 1GB of RAM did a respectable job
handling heavy games like Asphalt 8, Dead Trigger 2, etc. There were no crash
down sessions, in fact the overall gaming episode went on pretty well besides the
little heating issue and the graphics appearing not that intense and vibrant as they do
with other smartphones.
On testing the smartphone on AnTuTu Benchmark test where the device scored a
decent score of 18,582 and followed other affordable devices like Asus ZenFone 5
and Redmi Note.
We also ran the Nenamark 2.0 test on the Arya1+ and the device scored just about
fine by bagging 53.5 FPS. The score places the device a little below average in
gaming capacity owing to its relatively dull graphics.
Last but not the least comes the battery life of Arya A1+ smartphone. Salora has
trickled down a 2,000 mAh Li-Ion battery in the device that didn’t last long and
actually baffled us with hardly 5-6 hours of back-up after a full charge. A phone with
2,000 mAh of battery is at least expected to make it through the day, but the Arya
A1+ surprised us as its battery drained out after a 6 hours of mixed usage.
