each vignette.
Inspiration - Mixed-media film
Inspiration for style - Street art in Pilsen, Chicago
Realistic filming - transition from narrative to script
This is how I can capture the trauma she went through; capture distress upclose.
Realistic film dramatizes Esperanza social interaction with her neighbors:
Scenes dramatized…
Hairs
In her new home, she holds onto her mother; home is brought by the smell of her
mother's hair, the sound of the rain and her father’s snoring
Drama: her attachment with her mother for security; growing up
Boys and Girls
She scoldes her sister not to be friends with the Vargas kids; longs for new friends
Drama: her sisterly protective instinct
In between vignettes...
To tie together the vignettes into a smoother flow, add short scenes in between
and utilize transitional techniques both traditionally in film and creatively in
visual art
Add: News media montage of neighborhood
Simple transition
Zoom in to end the scene and out to start a new one
Creative transition from realistic to animated painting, or vice versa
Animation fades out and realistic film fades in to replace the animated
figure as the realistic version
Visual Art Animation - Transition from poetic words to visual art...
Boys and Girls: “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (9)
- metaphor; Esperanza wants to make new friends.
- Animated painting of balloon and anchor dramatized; illustrates wishful thinking for freedom from responsibility
Darius and the Clouds: “You can never have too much sky. You can fall asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky can
keep you safe when you are sad” (33).
- metaphor; The sky is compared to imagination and daydreaming as a limitless outlet for overwhelming emotions.
- Scenery of Darius and Es looking at sky transition from real to cartoonish; clouds transform into different
shapes...swirls of oil paint expresses freedom from social structure, order and control
There was an Old Woman She Had So Many Children She Didn’t Know What to Do: “Angel Vargas learned to fly and
dropped from the sky like a sugar donut, just like a falling star, and exploded down to earth without even an “Oh” (30).
- Simile; the Vargas kids are reckless. In this novel, concerning marriage, boys are described as shooting stars to land
and women are described as women waiting by the window.
Some vignettes are more poetic than others...
Some focus entirely on characters with no interaction with Esperanza, so in
order to alter the characterization of her neighbors, the vignette will be entirely
animated.
i.e. Sally, Papaya Juice on Sundays, Linoleum Roses
Others focus mostly on social interaction and conflict between characters and
Esperanza.
i.e. The monkey garden, Three Sisters, Red Clowns
Purpose of selecting which is more animated and which less is to draw a
distinction between...
Audience
Main concerns to consider:
Each character and scene must be captured as described
So, every detail in the book is meaningful
If the narrative is not accurately dramatized or if the poetic content is not
accurately expressed in visual art, then interviews and discussion will simply
allow an outlet for learning from mistakes.
On the good side; to draw a cause with this novel:
The film will support children who are living in poor neighborhoods in Chicago
by building a new library.
