This document summarizes salary trends for doctors in India in 2016. It finds that salaries have generally increased over the past 5 years for MBBS, MD/MS, and DM/MCh doctors. However, there remains a significant demand-supply gap of doctors in India compared to recommendations. While the number of medical colleges and seats have increased in recent years, higher education opportunities remain limited, contributing to emigration of medical professionals and shortage of doctors domestically. The healthcare sector in India is large and growing rapidly but faces ongoing challenges around access, quality and staffing that salaries alone cannot fully address.
