2. A cherry blossom, commonly known as a
Japanese cherry or Sakura, is the flower of
various Prunus or Prunus subg. Cerasus trees.
They are a prevalent species in East Asia,
particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. They
mainly refer to aesthetic cherry trees, as
opposed to cherry trees that yield edible fruit.
It is regarded as Japan's national flower.
3. The wild cherry tree is widely dispersed, primarily in the Northern
hemisphere. Cherry trees for decorative purposes are classed in the
genus Prunus, which has over 400 species in Europe and North
America. In Japan, China, and Russia, ornamental cherry trees are
classified as the genus Cerasus, which comprises of roughly 100
species split from the genus Prunus, and the genus Cerasus does
not contain, amongst others, Prunus salicina, Prunus persica
(Peach), Prunus mume, and Prunus grayana. However, throughout
Europe and North America, there were few wild cherry trees with
huge blossoms suited for cherry blossom viewing. Many of them
were not standard cherry tree forms and sizes.
4. Cherry trees are native to China's
intermediate northern and southern
regions, and are called as yinghua in
Chinese. However, some of China's
most renowned cherry blossom parks
represent Japan's brief control of areas
of China in the first half of the
twentieth century, or a contribution
from Japan thereafter or prior:
Qinglong Temple in Xi'an is a
significant example. In 806CE, the
Japanese monk Kukai brought in
cherry blossom orchards as a gift to
honor his time as a student at the
monastery.

6. During the Second
Sino-Japanese War,
Japanese forces planted
twenty-eight cherry
blossom trees at Wuhan
University.Despite their
historical significance,
the trees were
determined to be kept
after the war.
Around 800 cherry blossom trees were gifted to Wuhan University
in 1972, as China-Japan ties improved. Other gifts would be added
to the total in subsequent years. Wuhan University now contains
over a thousand cherry blossom trees of various varieties. 80% of
these cherry trees are direct descendants of Japanese cherry trees.
When the outbreak of COVID-19 made cherry blossom viewing
difficult in 2020, the status of cherry blossoms at Wuhan
University was posted on the Web and seen 750 million times.
7. Cherry blossoms have also
been used to symbolize
friendship between China and
Japan. In 1973, the year after
the Japan-China Joint
Communiqué was signed,
Japan gave cherry trees to
China as a symbol of
goodwill, and they were
planted in Beijing's
Yuyuantan Park.
Following that, cherry trees grew and
were planted, and the park became
famed for its cherry blossoms. In
1997, the Japanese Michinoku Bank
and arborist Kazio Saito planned to
open a cherry blossom park in Wuhan
City for the sake of friendship
between the two countries, and in the
same year, the Japanese city of
Hirosaki, home to the famous
Hirosaki Park for its cherry blossoms,
began to advise Wuhan City on cherry
tree planting and cultivation, and in
2016, Wuhan City and Hirosaki City
signed a friendship agreement.
East Lake Cherry Blossom
Park opened in 2001, and
2.5 million people visited in
2018. According to 2019
figures, the number of
cherry blossom-related
visitors topped 340 million,
with a total spending of
more than 60 billion yuan.

9. In 1912, Japan donated the United States 3,020
cherry blossom trees as a gift to commemorate
the two nations' increasing relationship,
replacing an earlier donation of 2,000 plants
that had to be burned due to illness in 1910.
These trees were planted in Manhattan's Sakura
Park and along the Tidal Basin and roads in
Washington, D.C.'s East Potomac Park. The first
two original trees were planted on the Tidal
Basin bank by first lady Helen Taft and
Viscountess Chinda. In 1965, the donation was
renewed with additional 3,800 trees. The cherry
blossom trees remain a famous tourist attraction
in Washington, D.C. (and the subject of the
annual National Cherry Blossom Festival) when
they bloom fully in early spring The community
of Kenwood in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside
of Washington, boasts over 1,200 trees that are
popular with both locals and visitors.

Branch Brook Park in Essex County, New
Jersey, is the oldest county park in the United
States and has the biggest concentration of
cherry blossom trees in one site in the United
States, with over 5,000 trees. San Diego's
Balboa Park boasts 1,000 cherry blossom trees
that bloom from mid- to late March. Lake
Balboa in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, has nearly
2,000 trees. A Japanese philanthropist provided
these trees, which were planted in 1992.
11. Over 2,000 flowering Japanese cherry trees can be
found in Philadelphia, half of which were a gift from
the Japanese government in 1926 in honor of the
150th anniversary of American independence, and the
other half were planted by the Japan America Society
of Greater Philadelphia between 1998 and 2007. The
cherry blossoms of Philadelphia may be seen in
Fairmount Park, and the annual Subaru Cherry
Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia honors the
flowering trees. The University of Washington's quad
in Seattle also contains cherry blossoms.
12. Other places in the United States hold an
annual cherry blossom festival (or sakura
matsuri), such as Macon, Georgia, which has
over 300,000 cherry trees. A major and
well-attended event is also held at the
Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, hosted the peace
conference that resulted in the Treaty of
Portsmouth, for which the initial cherry trees
in Washington, D.C. were planted. The gift of
Nichinan, the hometown of Marquis Komura
Jutar, Japan's envoy at the conference, was
many cherry trees planted on the bank of the
tidal pond close to Portsmouth City Hall. Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio, features 200
somei yoshino trees, a gift from Chubu
University in Japan.
14. In China, some prominent cherry blossom locations include:
