Valentine's Day originated from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, celebrated on February 15th. During this festival, priests would sacrifice goats and dogs and then whip women with the hides to promote fertility. In the 3rd century, Saint Valentine was martyred for secretly marrying Christian couples and helping Christians escape persecution. On February 14th, 269 AD, Valentine was executed. Later, Pope Gelasius I designated February 14th as St. Valentine's Day. Today, Valentine's Day is celebrated as a day of romantic love and affection between intimate companions.
