St. Rita of Cascia was an Italian nun born in 1381 who is venerated as a patron saint of lost causes, marriage problems, and domestic abuse. She is often depicted holding a crown of thorns or roses. Miraculously, roses have continued to grow outside St. Rita's cell and a vine that she planted and nurtured for a year in her garden still produces grapes abundantly. St. Rita is renowned and venerated throughout the world as evidenced by depictions of her found in churches in places like Hungary, Argentina, and Lebanon.
