From the Preface: "The pages that follow are designed to show that, while Saginaw in its infancy gave promise of being one of those numerous cities of mush-room development, so well known to the west, it had substantial backing and in a few years gave evidence of a steady and progressive growth. Many cities starting out as the center of the great timber wealth - the greatest the world had ever seen - would, when the time of the decline of that great industry came, have slumped back into an insignificant position, as many so-called lumbering towns have done in the past. But not so with Saginaw."
