With APOGEE just around the corner, all the technical clubs have been working round-the-clock
to get their projects completed and the preparations for the events done. Siddhant Mehandru,
the Coordinator of the Society for Automotive engineering, took out some time to talk to us
about his and the club’s contribution to the fest.
Their premier event, Up in the Air, is the one that SAE as a whole have contributed to. As
described by Siddhant, Up in the Air is an event which will be showcasing Remote-Controlled
airplanes in various competitions. An increase in participation is expected this time, with the
number of teams possibly increasing to seven from previous year’s two.
There are many other appealing projects made by groups within SAE. An automatic wrench, to
reduce the time taken to change the wheel on the vehicle, is the project the second years of the
Formula Student team have decided to do. Another team, consisting of students from third
year, are planning to design an automatic positioning solar panel. Siddhant himself is working
on a project pertaining to mechatronics: an appliance to calculate various friction coefficients.

When asked about the timings of the fest this year, Siddhant said that the primary reason for
these timings is to increase participation for the fest. The traditional timings of Apogee are
generally during March-end, but with various other technological institutes having their tech
fests around the same period, there has been a scarcity of participants over the years. But the
schedule means that there’ll be no clashes as such this time around, hence the participation will
increase, he explained.
One thing that Siddhant felt strongly about was the need of innovation in the automotive
organisation as a whole. He talked about the need to focus on the research part more than the
designing part of the vehicle. Also talking about the divide between Apogee and Oasis in terms
of how they are received by the students, he says that he would like to see Apogee being
comparable to Oasis in terms of enthusiasm and participation, something which has not been
seen in a long time.
All in all, Siddhant and the Society for Automotive Engineering have given it all to ensure that
the fest is a huge success this time around. He also hopes to see participation increase
drastically as compared to the previous editions of the fest.
