Nehemiah faced the challenge of some people oppressing and exploiting the poor in Jerusalem by charging excessive interest and even taking people's children as collateral. He angrily confronted the creditors and accused them of not acting in line with God's spirit of preventing perpetual slavery. The creditors were ashamed and agreed under oath to return all lands and remit all debts and interest. Nehemiah led by selfless example as governor, not taking taxes for himself for 12 years and prioritizing the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls over personal gain.
