Viveck P Kumar from the Class of 2004 at SIMSR organized an event for alumni. The event discussed different modes of communication and how discovery and manual exploration can provide incredible user experiences and change lives, as shown through the day of Rohit, a 28-year-old relationship manager who was addicted to Facebook. The event highlighted how SIMSR is launching an alumni club and thanked various people for their support including Anuj Bhargav, Dr. Suresh Ghai, CDR Sharma, and Mitesh Gala.

- These are our predominant way of time tested interactions – yahoogroups and googlegroupsThere are too many of them. For ex: I had to manage alumnisimsr@yahoogroups, pgpmsmarketing2004@yahoogroups, pgpms@yahoogroups, pgpms2004@yahoogroups.comAlso, it is only a broadcasting solution I cant find out the right alumni for the right purpose without spamming everyone. For instance, if I am going to US, I need to send a mail to everyone
- These are the next major mode of connect – social networking platformsThe problem is EFFECTIVE discovery. For instance, how do I find that someone who passed out 10 years ahead of me, is like minded as I and will be useful for me to connectWhile these platforms are great in what they do, they don’t seem to have solved the alumni problem. If they had, then all the alumnus would have both identified and leveraged their alumni who may be of use to them. Together, institutions would have been happier about leveraging their alumni which is not the case!

- 7 30 AM – Rohit gets an invite from his friends to hang out at mondegars on this Saturday. The occasion being his close friends (classmates) bday
- At 8 45 AM he receives a prompt as one of his classmates ( or his industry mate) lands in Mumbai. The same is applicable should Rohit be travelling as well. Ex. If he goes to Delhi, he can immediately see all his classmates who are stationed in Delhi and also his industry people
- At 10 AM, he goes for a meeting with a client at Ghatkopar. Since his client is not there, he finds out who are the people in and around Ghatkopar. Once he finds the people in that vicinity, he can send them a PAL REQUEST asking them to join for a quick coffee with him!

- Now from mobile we are moving to the Internet SiteAt 12 PM after meeting with his boss, he logs onto AlumClub Online platform to check out jobsHe can check out all alum posted jobsHe can under the ‘job feeds’ (refer to the screen) check out all the jobs from all leading job portals (naurki, monster, timesjobs, iimjobs,etc)He can open the job and apply OrShare it with his friends by clicking the share buttonLastly, by clicking on the tags on the right hand side he can also follow top companies, top locations, etc
- Since he did not find a suitable job, he can post a job marking the ‘job seeking’ option in the category. When he does that all the alums in the system are notified of the fact that a fellow alum is looking for a job.
- At 3 30 PM, he gets a mail saying someone has started following him.Just to ensure that senior alumni and women can exist peacefully without too many “friends request”, we created this asymmetric relationship. Ex: I can only follow the director general of this institute and cant befriend him. However, if he likes my profile and chooses to follow me back, we become friends!
- This is the icing on the cake.Our platform is smart and intelligent. When you hang out here – it understands what you like and don’t like – correspondingly it will choose and recommend like minded alumni from your fraternity. For instance, a person who passed out 10 years earlier who likes to start up a business and is interested in Telecom space (like you) will be recommended! The recommendation will work even if you don’t write anything on the site and just hang out there (98% of users are mere consumers).The future version of this is one step more. It will also suggest people who may better your business/career. Ex: You may be a manufacturer and it will recommend you a retailer!Lastly look at the profile, instead of long boring profile we made it short and crisp. If you like them explore more by clicking on detail profile, else move on.
- If you find a particular person who may be of help to you. Click on the ‘Send Mentor Request’. The following happensThe person is notified that someone would like to be your menteeIf the mentor accepts the invite, his contact details such as phone, email will be revealed to the menteeThey can take the relationship from here
- In the night when he logs into Facebook, he sees an alert of an article posted by his faculty or fellow alum. Since he likes the title, he decides to check it outWe let go of bulky PDF documents and made it a nice blog like interface! The best is yet to come…
- We also made it interactive…You can comment your opinionYou can also add comment to others comments You can vote (refer to the screen) on someone else’s answerYou can also THANK the person for the answer or mark that as NOT HELPFUL (refer to the screen). More than 2 Not helpfuls, that comment will be taken off.With this it will never be a monologue and we will create conversations!

- While you may contribute to your alumni for free, we found it appropriate to reward you. Introducing the clubs and badgesEvery action that you perform including something as basic as share will be badged. Example: (from the above screenshot – I posted jobs 17 times, question 39 times and I connected 8 times)Each badge carries points and these are dependent on activity. Your sharing carries lesser points compared to you posting an article/job compared to you donating to the instituteAs you gain points you can go from one club to another – INITIATORS CLUB (first level), MINISTERS CLUB (second level), PRESIDENTS CLUB (third level) and ALUMCLUB (the pinnacle)Within each club, you have 3 levels – bronze, silver, goldAs you cross lets say INITIATORS BRONZE, you will get free movie tickets or an institute tee shirtYour every action in this system is accounted and rewarded!
- At 10 50 he remembers his Singapore trip next week. Since he is used to Yahoogroups. He goes to our mail and types ‘ALU’. He will be immediately prompted alumni Batchwise. He can also look at industry wise and degree wiseHe can post a message to them! Basically you don’t have to remember what the group mail ids are…we made your life simpler!
- Suddenly he realizes, a minute later that he is in AlumClub, so he clicks on Discovery to check the people in SingaporeThere are 3 things of importance to alumni – Location, Industry, Class He can click on respective tabs Ex; Location or industry and check out whoever are there in his industry and his locationOn the left hand side he can alter the values such as ‘passed out in’ and check out a refined data. Ex: Everyone in my industry, based out singapore and passed out after 2000
- You don’t have to remember you login user name and pwd. Connect with FB and linkedin at the click of a button. The best part is once you update your profile in linkedin, we will have it updated at our end automatically! Your institution will now have the most latest and relevant profile!
