This document discusses research on the effects of anesthesia on the developing newborn brain. Studies in animal models have found that commonly used anesthetic drugs can cause neurodegeneration and increase apoptosis in the developing brains of neonatal rats, mice, and monkeys. The brain is most vulnerable during periods of rapid growth and synaptogenesis. While these preclinical studies raise concerns, the clinical relevance for human infants is still unclear as there are few clinical studies available. The document reviews the relevant preclinical data on different anesthetic drugs and their effects depending on dose, duration of exposure, and timing during brain development.
