Editor's Notes
Ryan was born in Hilo, Hawaii on June 6,1990.
He was lucky to have wonderful parents and an older brother to whom he always felt competitive with, Kyle.
His brother, Kyle, would often beat him in running, video games, and most especially judo. Judo played a big role in their lives because they pretty much did it their whole lives. At the age of 5, Ryan hated Judo because he wasn’t good at it.
His brother on the other hand was a star pupil. All of their sensei loved him.
His brother would often place 1st in a competition. And Ryan would place 3rd in three people there is.
He particularly remembered that there was a time when he overheard a conversation from their teachers saying, “This is the younger Higa, not the good one.”
He said that he couldn’t even disagree because it was true.
Fifth year was hard on Ryan because he had to switch schools.
It was a charter school so he had to take a placement test. However, he got placed with the older kids. At that time, he thought that the older kids would see him as cool because he skipped a grade. It was pretty much the other way. He was made fun of.
Ryan doesn’t pretty much publicly open up about the part of his life when he was bullied.
The typical pushing to the ground.
Ryan remembers every bully, specifically the worst. He codenamed him Richard. Richard was so mean to Ryan that he made excuses to his mother why he couldn’t go to school or why he had to change schools.
At that time, Ryan had darker thoughts or maybe as he said, “It was just puberty messing with his head.”
However, Ryan realized that the only reason Richard was bullying him was to make other people laugh. He thought that if he could make them laugh, no one would bully him. Fortunately, it worked.
Every time someone tries to bully him, he would retaliate in a joke.
From that moment, he wanted to be funny. He picked up his mom’s camcorder and took videos of himself. It became a tradition. On Sundays, he would have a new video for his family to watch.
Ryan had a huge crush on a girl named Nicole during 2nd Grade. He finally reconnected with her during 8th grade and got rejected without any explanation. Once again, he felt like he was less than everyone. Nicole’s got a boyfriend, he was less than him. His old friends found new friends, he was less than them. His brother graduated high school with 2nd Place in Judo State Championship, he was less than him.
He said that even the people who called themselves nerds had one another. Ryan had no one. He looked forward to class more than recess because that way he would sit somewhere and not look like a complete loser.
Then he decided to join the wrestling team. He had to lose 16 pounds in a week. He disciplined himself to half a can of tuna and 32 oz of water.
From then on, he felt like he could do anything.
He graduated high school with a state championship in wrestling and like his brother, 2nd in judo.
The videos he made for his family, he put them up in site called YouTube so he doesn’t have to physically bring them a copy.
He did not share his story so people would pity him because he was bullied. Rather, he knew that somewhere someone watching that video was feeling the same way he did.
There are many things that is outside of our control like a kid that bullies you, a girl that rejects you, or a brother that outshines you. But the only thing you can change is your perspective.
He said that feeling sad and sorry for ourselves is easy, so he challenges us to be happy.
There’s only two things that can stop you, your mind and your body. Some might argue that there is a third, the heart. But if you’ve been in his channel long enough, it still is less than three.
