5. Our History
• Roosevelt was homesteaded in 1905 in isolation from larger
communities of the Wasatch Front and medical services.
• After enduring three decades of illness and injury, residents of
Roosevelt and surrounding communities became convinced
that they needed to build a hospital.

6. Our History
• LDS church funded 60%, donations=40%
• Cost=$30k (+$20k for medical equipment)
• Fundraisers from bake sales to street dances were held to raise
the necessary funds.
• Construction began 1939, completed in 1942.

• Doors opened on August 14, 1944!
• We were established as the LDS Roosevelt Hospital.

The everyday functions of the hospital continued to rely on a
strong spirit of volunteerism.
• Patient meals, hospital grounds, laundering linens… all of this
was done by volunteers.
Growth continued because of
community-minded individuals.

• 1975: LDS Church divested itself of all its hospitals.
• Duchesne County assumed ownership of the hospital and the
facility was renamed the Duchesne County Hospital.

• 2001: Upon UBMC receiving nonprofit status, Duchesne County
no longer owned UBMC. Since that time, UBMC has been
operated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) under the direction of their
Board of Directors

• Soon, a 2-story clinic was built and our physician enterprise
grew rapidly beginning in 2001, when ten physicians were
recruited.
• This began an era of educated, skilled physicians bringing
specialized care close to home.

• 2008: Uintah Basin Healthcare was created with the hospital
name remaining as Uintah Basin Medical Center.
• Growth has continued, providing a continuum of care –a
comprehensive array of health services spanning all levels and
intensity of care.
• We are now the largest independent rural healthcare system in
the State of Utah.
