Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor born on July 4th 1883 who died on December 7th 1970. He is known for creating cartoons depicting complicated machines to perform simple tasks, which became known as Rube Goldberg machines. One example from his cartoons was a self-operating napkin, which showed an overly complex way to complete the easy task of wiping one's mouth.
