RSPCA Australia.
Among its many animal advocacy programs, RSPCA
Australia operates the Greyhound Racing campaign
to address a number of issues connected with the
greyhound-racing industry, including live baiting and
overbreeding. Live baiting refers to the method of
using live animals as bait during greyhound training
sessions.
3. According to RSPCA Australia, the practice of live
baiting is illegal in all territories across the country. The
organization notes that bait animals experience
chronic distress, injury, and pain when they are
attached to a mechanical lure and propelled
around the race track.
Along with mistreatment of bait animals, RSPCA
Australia states that the industry needlessly breeds
thousands of excess greyhounds in Australia each
year, creating a surplus of dogs that never race. The
number of unwanted greyhounds further increases as
greyhounds are retired after just a few racing
seasons, or discarded for reasons like inadequate
performance and injury.
4. Although greyhound adoption programs
work to re-home unwanted racing dogs,
they have difficulty saving the large number
of discarded greyhounds from euthanasia,
and RSPCA Australia estimates that 9,000
adult greyhounds are euthanized each
year.
