The citizens thought that Caesar was a great ruler at the beginning of
his reign, that Augustus was the perfect ruler of Rome, and that
Tiberius was a terrible leader.
Tiberius was the adopted son of Augustus and was the
second emperor. Although Rome prospered under his rule, Tiberius
was an untrustworthy emperor and was very cruel. He was a great
warrior and had many achievements in battle but because he was such
a poor leader, he was murdered by his loyal subjects, specifically
Caligula who later became emperor.

Caesar was the main reason the Roman republic fell. When
he was in power he called himself a dictator. But the people liked
him. In 51 B.C.E, he said “People are nearly always willing to
believe what they wish.” This strategy came in handy because at
the beginning of his rule, people loved him. They even made coins
with his face on them.

Julius Caesar was a great general, politician, master of
propaganda, and author. He was also known to be charming and a
great public speaker. In this picture, we see a general, or a leader of
some sort, surrendering to Caesar. This shows that he was a mighty
leader and was definitely feared.

This statue is meaningful because Caesar is standing in a
position that shows how much of a leader he was. He was first married
to Pompeia for political reasons, but when she died he married
Cleopatra. Caesar was murdered by a group of Roman nobles who still
believed in the republic of Rome. After being stabbed, Caesar lied on
his deathbed when he realized he had become what he had not wanted
to be, just like the leaders who came before him.

Octavian went through a lot to become emperor. When he
found out his uncle Julius Caesar had been killed, he rushed to Rome
to find out about the death. When he got there he read Caesar’s will, it
stated that Octavian was adopted by Caesar and was the heir to the
throne. But a man named Mark Antony also was competing for the
throne. There was a long war between them but finally, Octavian won.
He decided he did not want to be known as “a dictator for life” and
instead called himself the “first emperor of Rome.” He also decided to
rule by maintaining public order, not by force. The people loved him so
much they renamed him Augustus. (the revered one)

In this picture we see Augustus‘ friend and advisor, Gaius
Maecenas, presenting him with the liberal arts. Everybody is bowing
with respect and pride which shows they all care for Augustus. He
would contribute wealth, power, and happiness to Rome which was a
big pleaser to the people. Augustus would also give money to the poor
and would pay attention to all.

Augustus was obviously liked by his people. His stepfather,
Julius Caesar was murdered by the people of Rome, and Augustus‘
stepson, Tiberius was also murdered by the people. Augustus on the
other hand was not murdered but died because it was “his time.” this
might have been because unlike Caesar, he did not go against the
senators, and unlike Tiberius, he was trustworthy and generous. When
Augustus died, Rome never found a leader as good as him and
claimed him the best leader they ever had.

The Roman Gods were Roman religion, the people
worshipped the Gods, for religion.
Believe it or not, their was a King of the Gods before Jupiter. His name
was Saturn. Saturn, who is Jupiter’s father, is now the God of Time. He
cannot overrule his son as long as Jupiter is the King. He has three
sons, Jupiter, Neptune, and Pluto. They each represent air, water, and
death, three things that Saturn cannot destroy. He is still a very
important god.

He uses a weapon called a scythe. A scythe is a tool that cuts grass or
wheat with a long curved blade at the end of a long pole. It is very
similar to a sickle. Saturn ate his children that he had with Ops(wife)
because he believed one of them would overthrow him. He had eaten
the children before Neptune, Pluto, Ceres, Juno, and Vesta. When Ops
found out she was pregnant again, she secretly moved the baby to
Crete(the baby was Jupiter). Ops gave Saturn a stone-wrapped in
swaddling clothes for Saturn to eat.

Saturn believed that he had eaten Jupiter. Saturn was made by Jupiter
to vomit up all of the babies that he had eaten. War was declared on by
the three brothers and the other children on their father. The war was
known as Battle of the Titans. They defeated Saturn and he and all of
his titans were banished to the underworld. Saturn is still down there
today. This is how Saturn was overthrown by his own children.

Jupiter was the second king of the gods. He wasn’t anything like his
father, Saturn. He didn’t eat his children, he loved them. He was also
married to the first Goddess, Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Gods.
The eagle was his messenger. He and Juno had many children
together.

A few of their children were, Apollo, Diana, Mars, Venus, and Minerva.
All of the other gods were afraid of Jupiter. Out of Neptune, Pluto, and
himself, Jupiter took the air. Jupiter means Father Love. There was a
big temple on he Capital of Rome dedicated to Jupiter. The Romans
thought that Jupiter guarded their city and looked after them. His
wonder of the world is the Statue at Olympia.

Jupiter’s weapon was the lightning bolt. His son Vulcan made his
lightning bolts. Vulcan made his thunderbolts at his smithy in the
volcano Etna, in Sicily. Jupiter threw him out of Heaven after Vulcan
made him angry. He only used this one weapon. He is called Optimus
Maximus, the Best and Greatest. The largest planet in the solar system
was named after him.
