DRT is constituted under the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993 to provide fast and speedy recovery of debts owed to banks and financial institutions. DRT has jurisdiction over matters related to insolvency and bankruptcy of individuals, partnership firms, and proprietorship firms. As the adjudicating authority, DRT can obtain bankruptcy orders against debtors, enforce bankruptcy orders against the estate of the bankrupt, and provide remedies like discharge orders once the bankruptcy order has expired. DRT oversees the insolvency resolution process and bankruptcy applications, appointing bankruptcy trustees and notifying creditors.
