Rødby Harbour
Rødby is a small town on the island of Lolland in Denmark.
Rødby harbour is located 5 km Southwest of Rødby town.
A ferry service operated by the company Scandlines connects Rødby with
Puttgarten on the German island, Fehmarn.
Considered an important link between Denmark and Germany,
there are four ferries giving one connection every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day.
In 2007 the Danish and German authorities agreed to replace the
ferry service with a bridge, which was due to have been completed in 2017.
In 2010 the authorities agreed to make the fixed link a
submerged tunnel,rather than a bridge.
In 2012 the completion date was estimated to be 2021,
in 2014 further pushed back to 2024 and in 2015 to 2028.
At €7 billion this is currently the largest infrastructure project in Europe.
The project awaits legal approval in Germany,
pending investigation into environmental concerns.
In the meantime, Scandlines decided to refurbish the Rødby linkspan.
A link span is a type of bridge used mainly in the operation of
moving vehicles on and off a RoRo vessel or ferry, particularly to allow
for tidal changes in water level.
Area of Rødby link span requiring repairing 1200 m2.
Scandlines selected the Bimagrip® anti-skid coating system from Beegrip Ltd .
Made in the UK, Bimagrip® is the only high performance anti-skid coating system
with a 25 year Marine industry track record.
Scandlines selected Thortech Bridges & Marine as the main contractor.
“Turnkey” application included site safety, removal of waste and
separation of waste streams.
Thortech have over 10 years experience in Bimagrip® application.
As a part of Scandlines’ program to reduce environmental impact,
M/V Prinsesse Benedikte was converted to hybrid propulsion in 2013.
Followed by the other three vessels in 2014.
This results in a reduction of CO₂ emissions by up to 15%.
At the same time, Scandlines’ ferries were equipped with scrubbers,
reducing the emission of sulphur and soot particles by at least 90%.
