May 7-13, 1864 saw a series of skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces along Rocky Face Ridge in Georgia. General Sherman launched attacks against Confederate positions that were repelled. On May 9, the Confederates won a bloody battle against General Harker's forces. Sherman decided to maneuver southward towards Resaca to support General McPherson. By May 13, the Union forces marched unopposed through Mill Creek Gap towards Resaca, marking the beginning of Sherman's Atlanta Campaign.
