1. I. Discuss or expound what you have learned in the topic redox reaction ,
providechemistry-based proofssubstantiate your idea.
I have learned about the oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction,it is a
type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two
species. An oxidation-reduction reaction isany chemical reaction in which
the oxidation number of a molecule, atom, or ion changesby gaining or
losing an electron. Redox reactionsare common and vital to some of the
basic functionsof life, including photosynthesis, respiration, combustion,
and corrosion or rusting.
Reaction between Iron and Hydrogen Peroxide Fe2+ is oxidized to
Fe3+ by hydrogen peroxidewhen an acid is present. This reaction is
provided below.
2Fe2+ + H2O2 + 2H+ → 2Fe3+ + 2H2O
Oxidation half-reaction: Fe2+→ Fe3++ e–
Reduction half-reaction: H2O2 + 2e– → 2 OH–
Thus, the hydroxideion formed from the reduction of hydrogen peroxide
combines with the proton donated by the acidic medium to form water.
2. II. Find 5 different pictures of real-world redox reactions, also show the
balanced redox reaction of each and identify the reducing and oxidizing agents.
Note: No similar redox reaction to your classmates.
1. Photosynthesis - is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and
carbon dioxideto create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.
6 CO2 + 6 H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6 O
Water is being oxidized and carbon dioxideis reduced.
H2Ois the reducing agent
CO2 is the oxidizing agent.
3. 2. Alkaline Batteries – aredisposable batteries and arenot suitable for high-
power electrical appliances.
Zn (s) + Cu2+
(aq) → Zn2+
(aq) + Cu (s)
Zn is the reducing agent.
Cu2+
is the oxidizing agent.
4. 3. Tarnish - is a thin layer of corrosion thatformsover copper, brass,
aluminum, magnesium, neodymium and other similar metals as their outermost
layer undergoesa chemical reaction.
3Ag2S+ 2Al---> 6Ag + Al2S3
Al is the reducing agent.
Ag2S2
is the oxidizing agent.
5. 4. Corrosion - is a naturalprocess that converts a refined metal into a more
chemically stable form such as oxide, hydroxide, carbonateor sulfide. ... In the
most common use of the word, this means electrochemical oxidationof metalin
reaction with an oxidantsuch as oxygen or sulfates.
Fe+2H+
Fe2+
+H2
Fe is the reducing agent.
2H+
is the oxidizing agent.
6. 5. Bleaching - a process of whitening fabric by removal of naturalcolour,
such as the tan of linen, is usually carried out by means of chemicals selected
according to the chemical composition of the fibre
H2O2 (aq) + NaOCl (aq) → NaCl (aq) + H2O (aq) + O2 (g)
H2O2 → O2 is the reducing agent.
NaOCl → NaCl is the oxidizing agent.
