Healing Technologies aims to develop an intestine-exploring robotic pill that can provide early screening for intestinal ailments from home. The pill would wirelessly transmit its position and samples collected within the intestine to allow computer-driven diagnosis with fewer errors than existing endoscopy methods. The startup faces risks developing the diagnostic technology and pill design, but partners with universities advancing microbiome science and seeks funding from grants and investors to bring the life-saving benefits of early intestinal cancer detection to patients worldwide.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze how wireless healthcare are becoming economic feasible. Improvements in microprocessor and transceiver ICs, MEMS, photo-sensors, and other electronic components are making wireless healthcare economically feasible. These slides show how improvements in these components are making capsule endoscopy, smart drug delivery, and digital pills economically feasible. Capsule endoscopy involves sending a small device through the body, particularly the digestive system, to take images. Further improvements in electronic components are needed to further reduce the size of these devices. Drugs can be dispensed through smart pills at programmed times or can be triggered by sensors that detect the correct location. Digital pills send signals to mobile phones or other devices when the pills have been taken. The slides conclude by discussing the role of mobile phones in increasing the number of wireless healthcare applications.
I manage my health with digital tools and I’m not alone. An estimated and growing 69% of consumers and patients are also engaged in monitoring their own healthcare . The interest in personal wellness combined with the proliferation of healthcare ‘wearables’ available to consumer puts us on the cusp of an extraordinary shift in healthcare: Technology enabled patients are empowered to change their lifestyle to prevent or stop chronic disease, and become healthier than ever before. The implications of this on every aspect of the healthcare industry –from delivery and population health to access and cost will be astounding.
But wearable technology is still in its infancy, quite complex and limited in what it can do. The next generation will be intelligent and voice-enabled and go beyond tracking to interacting with and assisting consumers with their healthcare choices, and changing behaviors for the better. Imagine a wearable that could warn you of risks developing, nudge you towards better choices for that day based on your health profile, and keep you engaged in a treatment regime.

Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. • Our initial intent was to use a pill design similar to the one
used by Given and Sony. The images of the intestine would
be sent via networks to India or another location, where
human operators would analyze them and come up with alerts
when needed. This concept was susceptible to human error.
• Thus, we refocused our development towards developing a
diagnostic pill that would provide automated computer-driven
analysis of a patients condition.
