Case study
• While welcoming the ongoing infrastructure work in Vellore City Municipal Corporation limits,
residents are clamouring for more road space and smart ways of tackling traffic issues
• At a recent meeting held by the residents welfare association, members have sought the construction
of a road over bridge (ROB), widening of existing roads, regulation of share autos and ‘strict’ action
against encroachment on arterial roads.
• The National and State Highways department should think for the next 30 years and prepare a
project to address these bottlenecks.
• There has been a demand for modernization of both old and new bus stands inside the city, which till
date remains only on paper.

In his letter to Mr. Gadkari, Mr.
Viswanathan said that Vellore city
which is the fastest growing city in
Tamil Nadu has been selected for
the Smart City project and work
had already begun. Vellore city is
the heart of the Vellore district
which is the gateway to Tamil
Nadu with neighboring Karnataka
and Andhra Pradesh.
• Katpadi railway junction at NH234 is an important one and
a two-lane RoB is located at this junction, Mr. Viswanathan
added. The National Highways road connecting the RoB is
a four-lane one and the State Highways is also of four-lane
capacity making the two-lane RoB a bottleneck. It was a
long-standing demand of the people of Vellore to
construct a four-lane RoB in NH234 instead of the existing
two-lane RoB at Katpadi junction, he said.
• Similarly Katpadi-Chittoor bus stand junction at NH234
is a Y-shaped intersection which sees heavy movement
of traffic towards the State highways intersecting with
National Highways. There are several schools, colleges
and residential areas along this road creating traffic jams
and in some cases there have been fatal accidents during
peak hours.

• According to a study conducted by a
team of the SMBS of VIT University,
Vellore two-wheelers and three-
wheelers shared 76% of the total traffic
during the morning peak hour at the
Chittor Bus stand in Vellore.
• Constant flow of vehicles from
numerous direction has turned the
Green Circle not just a busy junction
but also a dangerous one.
• For pedestrians, crossing this junction is
almost close to impossible.
