Joseph Labrecque gives a presentation on Adobe Edge, a new web motion and interaction design tool from Adobe. Adobe Edge allows designers to bring animated content to websites using web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3. It addresses the lack of solid tooling for HTML animation and interaction. Adobe Edge borrows concepts from Flash Professional like the stage, actions, and a standardized runtime model, but uses a timeline and keyframing approach more like After Effects. Edge content does not replace what can be done in Flash, but provides new choices for the tooling and technologies used.
Adobe Animate CC: Tool for the Changing Tech LandscapeJoseph Labrecque
Joseph Labrecque, author of the best-selling book "Learn Adobe Animate CC for Interactive Media" will facilitate a lively discussion of the Animate CC animation and interactivity software with a focus on producing content for educational purposes. We'll start with an overview of the software, its history in education circles, and the impact it's had on the changing technological landscape. We will also have a beginner's demonstration on how faculty and staff can use the software to design and produce useful animations and interactives to supplement classroom and online content.
Animate CC allows an abundance of options when creating both animated and interactive content to enhance learning. Animated infographics... interactive experiments and games - all is possible with Animate. In this session, you'll get a solid introduction to how to create your own engaging content using this fabulously creative application.
Responsive Prototyping with WordPress and Atomic UI Libraries - anthonydpaul ...Anthony D. Paul
Put down that design tool! We typically turn toward graphic tools like Sketch for wireframing, then export into a presenter like InVision for usability tests. We try our darndest to get the menu functionality to “appear” like code, to fake responsive design, and to audit every hotspot linking to every screenshot. The irony is, we spend more time trying to get non-code looking like code than if we’d used code.
But wait, I’m not a dev! That’s cool. I’ve got you covered. Attendees will be given live demos of existing responsive frameworks, learn how to customize them, and walk away with a foundation for creating their own code prototyping kit (without needing to know how to code). This talk is written for information architects, UI/UX designers, product leads, and researchers.
What you’ll learn:
• How to use WordPress to create a content-managed prototype, regardless of what you intend to build your final site in;
• Which UI frameworks are cheapest and easiest to “wireframe” with, code-free; and
• Why this approach is simpler than many of your sketching tools, arriving at a better and more testable IA/content prototype more quickly.
Anthony is a UX researcher and designer at GE Transportation, creating web applications and data visualizations for the US railroad industry. Outside the office, you’ll find him spread across regional meetups and conferences—evangelizing IA/UX, accessibility, and a variety of open source dev projects. He’d divulge something funny from his past, but these days the Internet does a better job of surfacing our embarrassing moments; find him anywhere by Googling “anthonydpaul”.

5 Reasons Why Your Website Is[n’t] a Native App (PrDC 2015)David Wesst
“We need a mobile app. Make our website into a mobile app.” The request seems reasonable, doesn’t it? Your website is JavaScript, native apps are JavaScript, why wouldn’t you make your website into an application? In this presentation we’ll give you 5 reasons why your website shouldn’t end up as a native application to give you the tools you need to not only turn down the request, but on how to make a better solution.

With the increasing variety of web enabled devices entering the market, the next generation of the web will need to be more flexible than ever before. In this session we will explore how Responsive Design can help build "A Foundation for the Web" and ensure maximum compatibly on any device now or in the future. We'll also take a glimpse at how using solutions like Zurb's Foundation and ASP.Net MVC can jump start development, and produce effective results fast.
In just about every industry, rapid prototyping is described as “A group of techniques used to quickly produce a working model”, and web development should be no different. Rapid prototyping allows developers to quickly communicate and collaborate on the product they are creating while investing minimal resources. When used effectively, a prototype can provide structure to a project, ensuring that the development team and the customer are working towards the same vision and goal.
The Figma prototyping hacks will be covering best practices and tips needed to get the best out of prototyping. Some of these can be simple prototyping hacks that when combined with other hacks will create a complex transition or interaction. The hacks can be random and do not have to be sequentially related.

Spark: Authoring Experience++ in Drupal 7, 8, and BeyondAngela Byron
Spark is an initiative led by Acquia's Office of the CTO under Dries Buytaert, the Drupal project lead. We take a holistic look at Drupal's competition and design and implement features to help close the gaps.
One big gap that has consistently held Drupal adoption back is that of the out-of-the-box content authoring experience. Hand-typing HTML like it's 1994, previews that aren't actually previews, and interfaces that are unusable on a mobile device all present big challenges for those coming to Drupal. While all of these problems have numerous workarounds in contrib, Spark's goal is to improve the Drupal product itself to eliminate this friction innately, so site builders can spend less time smoothing out rough edges and more easily focus on what they came to Drupal to do: build their actual sites. :)
Spark is both a Drupal distribution and a set of discrete modules for both Drupal 7 and Drupal 8 (in many cases, Drupal 8 core) which can enhance the user experience for your site's content authors, including:
Mobile Friendly Navigation Toolbar
In-Place Editing
Responsive Preview
WYSIWYG editing
Improved Accessibility
Redesigned Administration Theme
...and more!
This talk will focus on demonstrating these new features and explain how site builders can take advantage of them, as well as talk about what the next areas of focus for the Spark team will be for Drupal 9 and beyond.

VideoManager: Using Flash Technology and HTML5 together for University Media ...Joseph Labrecque
VideoManager emerged at the University of Denver from the need to organize all public videos at the university in a central repository to improve tracking, management, and communication. The final outcome is a central web-based video portal used to showcase all significant public university videos.
This session is an overview of the University of Denver VideoManager application and covers:
Technologies involved; HTML5 and Flash Technology working together for an ideal user experience
Unique server configuration; ColdFusion, server-based Adobe AIR, and Flash Media Server
Usage by university videographers, staff and faculty contributors, and students
Expected teaching and learning outcomes
Exploring the world of Open Source Design, looking at what designers are doing with open source tools like gimp, inkscape, and blender3d. We also look at how designers get creative with interface design using various designer friendly open source languages like CSS, PHP, JS, and more.
Luckily, there’s plenty of good quality coding training available here on the Internet. What better place to learn web development than the web itself?
What exactly is HTML5 and why is it such a big deal? Will it make a big difference to your business, and is it worth the investment?
HTML5 gives your website new interactive capabilities that allow your visitors to engage with you like never before. Instead of constant page reloads, cumbersome, slow scripts and crash-causing plugins on your site, your website will flow with the technological efficiency of HTML5 and your brand will look much more professional because of it.
Drupal is the premiere CMS, used by thousands of businesses, public agencies, and schools. Drupal is changing to accommodate new web technologies such as mobile. This touches upon how Drupal works for mobile.
Recently Steve Jobs started a war against my favorite browser plugin, Adobe Flash. This is my talk on the Apple situation, and then an open look at HTML5 and some of the great new features in Adobe AIR2.
Bottom line, technology is a tool, and it's up to you to know your problem so that you can choose the appropriate tool for the job.
Ever since the infamous ‘thoughts on flash’ letter that Steve Jobs wrote in 2010, Flash has been regarded as a dying technology, abandoned in favour of HTML5 and web standards. But is HTML5 really ready for the rich media prime-time, and does Flash really have nothing left to give? In this talk, I’ll explore some areas where Flash is continuing to make a huge impact both in and beyond the browser, cut through some of the confusion, PR fails, and straight up deception in the front end wars and share some ideas on the appropriate use cases for both Flash and HTML5 in the ever changing digital landscape.
To paraphrase Douglas Adams: if flash is dead then it hasn’t stopped moving yet.
Web development nowadays is getting popular. Many company focus to develop their product in web application. Generally, web development divide into 2 parts, Backend & Frontend. Backend doesnt have improvement or new features too much after API technologies. But it is very different with frontend. There are lots of framework, tools, and approach in frontend area. Currently, there are 3 frontend technologies which get most attention both from Company and Developers. Those 3 are: Angular, React, and Vue.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

4. Adobe Edge is a new web motion and
interaction design tool that allows designers
to bring animated content to websites, using
web standards like HTML5, JavaScript, and
CSS3.
7. Flash and HTML are not in any way enemies
or opposed to one another. Both can serve
very different purposes and both are useful in
many different (and sometimes similar!)
circumstances.
9. WHY ADOBE EDGE?
There is no solid, widely adopted tooling support for
HTML animation and interaction.
• Adobe has a long history or web and animation tooling:
– After Effects
– Flash Professional
– Dreamweaver
– Edge
• As libraries and specifications mature, we can begin using
these tools to effectively create content in support of the
technology.
12. FAMILIAR CONCEPTS
Edge borrows much of its animation and
interactivity from Flash Professional.
• The concept of a Stage.
• The idea of Actions.
• A standardized runtime model.
(The “Adobe Edge Runtime”)
• Note that Actions in Edge are similar to Flash 4 Actions.
However, the timeline and keyframing is more akin
to that found in After Effects.
14. TAKE-AWAYS
• Edge content does not in any way replace what
can be done in Flash… but now we have choices
with the tooling we use and what technology to
target based upon specific project guidelines.
• Adobe Edge is a new tool and functionality is in a
period of major flux.
• The concepts in Edge should be familiar to those
who have done animation in Flash.
