Our mission
is to motivate
healthy and
energetic
older people
to go out and
be active.
Important Ares of Exercise
A regular strength training program
helps reduce body fat and burn calories
more efficiently. It also helps preserve
and enhance muscle mass and bone
mass, regardless of age.
Cardiovascular fitness enhances the
ability of the heart and lungs to sup-
ply oxygen-rich blood to the working
muscles. This enables your cells to
burn more fat during both exercise and
inactivity.
Exercises that improve balance can help
prevent falls, a common problem in older
adults and stroke patients.
Flexible joints require less energy to
move through a greater range of motion.
Stretching works towards decreasing
resistance in muscle tissue during any
activity. It also helps increase blood and
nutrients in tissues.

of Regular
Exercise

Exercise
Benefits of Biking
- Benefits of cycling outweigh
the dangers 20:1
- 2nd lowest impact sport
- Provides opportunities for
recreation and socialising
- Strengthens heart muscles
- Increases lung capacity
- Improves balance and
coordination by building up
deteriorating muscles
- Increases blood flow
Dangers of Biking
- Falling/Accidents
- Traffic
- Heart Problems
- Cramps/muscle injuries
- Hunched posture is bad for
lower back,neck, shoulders and
wrists
“Between 1995 - 2009 there was
a 22% increase in the people
from ages 60-79 riding bikes in
the USA”
Seniors account for nearly 37%
of the nationwide population.
In the Netherlands 25% of the
people on bike trips are above
the age of 75.
Biking
How can biking be
made safer and
more accessible
for the elderly?
Our Goals Are To:
Improve Posture
By promoting riding with a
straight rather than hunched
back.
Improve Awareness
By helping the user stay in tuned
with the world around them while
on the bike.
Improve riding safety
By keeping the rider aware of
present dangers, and in the case
of an emergency provide peace
of mind that the right people will
be notified.
Improve Confidence
By making the elderly feel safe
and comfortable on a bicycle as
they age.

Main Interface
Vibrating Handles
Headlights
Blind Spot Warning Lights
Ergonomic Grips
Control Dial
Handlbars
Vibrating Handles
Vibrate for turning directions and
to warn rider about on coming
cars.
Rear Facing Brake Light
Alerts other drivers when rider is
turning and slowing down.
Headlights
Projects light ahead of the bike.
Main Interface
Allows rider to find trails, get
directions, track their rides, and
get alerts about dangers on the
road.
Blind Spot Warnings
Light up when there is an on
comoing vehicle picked up by the
rear blind spot camera..
Control Dial
Allows rider to navigate the main
interface while riding.
Ergonomic Grip
Allows a comfortable grip and
promotes better posture while
biking.
Interface
With the Ride Rite interface users can
track their distance traveled, elevation,
their best times, and how many calories
they burned during their trips. Ride Rite
also allows the user to find local trails
and use Google maps navigation.
The rear facing cameras allow the rider
to see on coming cars and riders in their
blind spots. When objects approach
dangerously in the rear the handlebars
will work with the interface to warn the
rider by vibrating, lighting up, and high-
lighting the object on the screen.
The emergency feature detects when the
rider falls and/or is hit, then proceeds to
call an emergency contact or 911. The
rider can cancel the emergency call if
they feel they are okay to proceed.

Future
After finalizing all of our designs
(handlebars and interface) we
entered competitions such as
the Standford, A Design, Red Dot,
and Braun Prize competitions in
order to receive feedback from
industry professionals.
In the future we see Ride Rite
going from a handlebar and
interface attachment to a
whole smart biking system.
We set out to make biking
safer and more accessible to
the elderly, but we believe our
design can benefit everyone.
