Editor's Notes
Ladies and Gentleman, thank you for inviting me into your practice today. My name is Dominic Corry and I am the Senior Projects Manager for Cardea Solutions.
Today I am going to present to you a CPD seminar about window security, which covers the window security standards you need to be aware of, different product specifications that are available and also typical application.
First of all, I would like to briefing introduce the company and explain a little about what we do.Until earlier this year, the company traded as Fingershield (UK) Ltd, and changed name in May to reflect the growing diversity within our product portfolio. The company was started in 1999 and we specialise in safety and security across 5 operational divisions.
The most established division is Fingershield, where we provide finger guards to prevent finger-trapping accidents on the hinge-side of the door. Typical sectors we sell into include schools, nurseries and a range of distributors who sell to trade customers. Fingershield products are also distributed internationally in Scandavania, Israel, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and will be sold in the USA in 2012.More recent developments include the introduction of door stoppers to prevent finger-trapping on the handle-side of the door and also fire safety devices that enable you to legally keep fire doors open. If the fire alarm sounds, the devices will automatically close the fire door.Simple Safety Solutions is the online child safety store that sells to domestic customers. With over 450 products in the range to date, Simple Safety Solutions has a vast portfolio of products that include safety gates, baby monitors and playpens. New to Cardea. Solarishield is home to some revolutionary solar blinds that are imported from Sweden and sun awnings, that are typically sold to schools and commercial customers from a range of sectors.
Secure-Ring is a police approved door chain that have been tested to the highest standards and is ideal for the housing sector and is available from a selection of trade counters. However, the company division we are focusing on today is Window Security Solutions, which provides window grilles, security shutters and polycarbonate shields, dealing predominately with the commercial sector.
Just to give you a very quick overview of my background and experience. If you have any questions if you can please note them down as there is a question and answer session at the end of the seminar.
By the time I have completed this presentation I hope you will have gained some further insight into the principles of window security. To start we will briefly run through the current window security standards that are in place that should be taken into consideration when specifying windows. Then I will cover off a range of window security products that are available on the market today, that includes both retrofit and products that can be built into your project at the development stage. We will look at the benefits of each type of window security products and I will show you some typical applications of the products too.
First of all, I would just like to ask - how do you define security?(Opportunity for answers)
There are a range of definitions for security, but in this instance, we are focusing on the protection or precautions that can be taken to protect a building and the people in it.
Moving on to window standards, here are a few that you are probably aware of.
Firstly, when specifying windows for domestic applications, there is BS:7950, which relates to ensuring the are enhanced for security.BS 7950 is applicable to new windows as manufactured and prior to installation and is applicable to windows with key unlocking hardware, and is also applicable to windows with other than key unlocking hardware when fitted with laminated glass.
Depending on the type of materials used, BS 7950 needs to be supported by the relevant standard to materials such as aluminium, PVC-U and wood.
There are also additional standards such as BS 6510 that relates to steel windows and even doors and also LPS 1270, which is currently in draft format but which looks at glazing and window films with the aim to help specifiers to choose films that resist attack.
A 2nd standard is LPS 1175. This standard from the Loss Prevention Scheme cover testing and classifying the how secure things like building components are.In terms of burglary resistance, there are grades awarded from 1 to 6, with 1 being for low risk and 6 being the highest risk.
LPS 1270 is for security glazing and films and again through testing films are classified to help specifiers to select the right products for their project,
BS EN 356:2000 specifies requirements and test methods for security glazing designed to resist actions of force by delaying access of objects and/or persons to a protected space for a short period of time. This European standard classifies security glazing products into categories of resistance to actions of force.Hammerglass video (click to play) – Here is an example of the testing process.
What is Secured by Design? – Are you all aware of it? (show of hands?)
Secured by Design is run by the Association of Chief Police Officers (otherwise known as ACPO), which has an overall objective to design out crime by using products that have been awarded Secured by Design accreditation to reduce crime.
Secured by Design focuses primarily on crime prevention by looking at the design and layout of homes and commercial properties to ensure that security is built in.They also are very active in promoting the standard and the use of window security standards for products and applications.
With over ½ million burglaries reported each year, it is shown that areas where Secured by Design policies have been adopted can have up to 75% fewer burglaries over time.
I am not sure how many of you will be aware, but The Developers Award is a certificate given to building developments which, following consultation with local Crime Prevention Design Advisors (sometimes called Architectural Liaison Officers), are built to conform to the SBD guidelines and so reduce the opportunity for crime. For free information and advice on how to build to Secured by Design specifications and reducing crime through environmental design, you can find contact details for your local Crime Prevention Design Advisor on the Secured by Design website.
Now we are going to cover types of window security, the benefits of each product and also typical application to help you with any specification you are required to do.We have brought some samples along for you to look at after the presentation so that you can get a better idea of their contruction.
There are 6 standard types of window security products, including retractable grilles, window bars, shutter, mesh grilles and a few more advanced polycarbonate products. Some of these products can be retrofit or built in at the design stage.
Retractable window grilles are ideal for places where they want internal security products. The retractable security grilles system can be easily fitted to the face or reveal of a window or door aperture and can be specified in a single or double-sash configuration. Where a clear walk through is required the security grille's bottom track can be made to fold up.The window gates incorporate a high grade steel construction in cross ‘X’ lattice as standard and ‘S’ lattice as an option and can be power-coated in a wide range of colours.A Secured by Design version of the retractable grilles is available if required and has been tested to a very high standard as you will see in this video. (click to start)
When extra security needed, the retractable window grilles is available in the insurance approved version which is LPCB certified. Stylish, yet deceptively strong, the retractable grilles are a tough physical barrier and a visual deterrent. What makes them very popular, is that they are unobtrusive, and can be folded back when not in use and are essentially maintenance free and easy to use.
As you can see the retractable grilles have many applications but in particularly they are commonly seen in shops, offices and even homes.
The removable window bar system uses tough powder-coated steel window bars, which are locked in place on the inside of windows, in either a vertical or horizontal format. Strong extruded aluminium retaining units secure each bar, yet the unique locking system means that they are released in seconds.Easy to install, the window bar system is designed to fit as close as possible to the window frame, which will avoid any cavity for dust and dirt to collect in. Operated by a single radial lock point, the key must always be pressed in before any key rotation is possible. A higher security fixed window bar system is also available for locations where removal is not a requirement.
The removable window bars protect vulnerable window openings, but have the added benefit that they can be released from the inside to allow total vision or maintenance of windows. This make the security bars ideal for lower security, domestic and commercial applications where removal of the window bars is required occasionally and a very useful option for openings that fall below the minimum size for retractable window grilles.Suitable for installation in a horizontal or vertical format, the window security bars are finished to a high standard and delivers security which is quick and easy to install, yet highly effective in a range of locations.
Highly versatile, security shutters fit internally or externally in either the window reveal or around the opening. Security shutters incorporate a secure locking device using bottom rail shoot or bullet locks which engage with the side guide channel. The shutters can be automated using a Somfy motor.Although supplied in either white or brown as standard, to further enhance the aesthetics, the window roller shutters can be powder-coated in a wide range of colours complimenting the look of the building.
The window security shutters have been tested and approved to LPS 1175-1 and are police and insurance approved. Unlike other certificated window roller shutters, the shutters use a 38mm double-walled extruded aluminium slat. This coils very tightly into a range of compact boxes (165mm – 250mm), minimising their visual impact, which is often a requirement for commercial and domestic installations where aesthetic considerations are paramount.
The window security shutters are suitable for a variety of applications including schools, retail outlets, commercial and public buildings and can also be suitable for domestic applications where window security is of paramount importance.
Mesh security window shield products prevent window vandalism and keeps intruders out and are a modern but effective alternative to traditional and unsightly window security measures like steel bars and shutters that promote an institutional feeling within. From the outside, the window security shields gives the appearance of tinted glass and are barely noticeable from inside a building with daylight still able to enter rooms behind an installed shield.
From a distance this intruder window security grill gives the impression that the windows are fitted with tinted glass but at close quarters it is a visible deterrent to prospective thieves and vandals. The shields are also flexible enough to prevent or remove graffiti with ease. The price of a single installation of our window security shields can more than offset the cumulative costs of ongoing problems with vandalism, which often may require not only window re-glazing, but also an extensive broken glass clean-up operation. With safety also of the utmost concern, operational down-time is also another unfortunate consequence of break-ins and vandalism.
Our window security shields are particularly suited to local authority establishments and public buildings, and are widely specified within the educational arena. Many schools have embraced the benefit of installing window security shields, not only to protect valuable items such as computers, musical and sports equipment, but also to deter and prevent vandalism. The shields are also flexible enough to prevent or remove graffiti with ease.
If the aesthetics are an issue for you when selecting the type of window protection products to install to your establishment then polycarbonate window shields offer the perfect solution. It provides an invisible deterrent against vandalism and casual intruder entry, looking like a standard window from a distance. In terms of window protection these shield will withstand a sustained attack from stone throwing and most hand tools and is made from Lexan Excell, a transparent polycarbonate that looks like glass.
The polycarbonate shield have the distinct benefit that they offer invisible protect, with the image of the Co-op pharmacy illustrating that it is virtually undetectable. The shields are virtually unbreakable so it would only be detected when a vandal or thief tried to smash the window and the window remained intact! It combines proprietary UV protection and excellent weathering properties, with tough impact resistance and there are no ongoing maintenance costs to consider.
Recent work including Co-operative Pharmacies and a social housing project in Durham.(Please flesh out project detail in own words)
Polycarbonate is now a viable glass alternative as you can see from this demonstration video (click to play video). There are 2 types of the polycarbonate available, which are Insulate Polycarbonate & Single Pane PolycarbonateInsulate PolycarbonateThis unique insulated glazing system available as double or triple glazing with a polycarbonate outer pane. Normally polycarbonate is not used in insulated glazing systems since the material is not 100% diffusion proof. However, by using an innovative coating technology, this type of polycarbonate overcomes the problem of vapour in the dead space between the layers. Apart from its ability to withstand burglary and vandalism attempts, Insulate also has excellent sound reduction properties and a low U-value It can even be ordered in a special heat reduction model.Single Pane PolycarbonateThe single pane polycarbonate is for replacement glazing (re-glazing) purposes with unbreakable glass in existing sashes/frames.Single pane polycarbonate is available in various thicknesses for re-glazing in existing sashes or frames in, for example, older coupled sashes and landmark buildings. The installation can be carried out without any damage to the existing architecture, and saves energy and improves the U-value.A further benefit is a noise reduction of 30Db Rw.When used in a single glass window or in coupled sashes, the outer or inner pane is exchanged for Single Pane Polycarbonate. Fastening in existing sashes is done with a special silicone because of the special scratch resistant coating on polycarbonate panes. This type of polycarbonate carries a 5 year warranty as standard
A polycarbonate window is almost impossible to break, and is 300 times stronger than glass. Perhaps the biggest advantage of polycarbonate, is that it is easily integrated into any façade system. Thanks to a special coating, this next generation polycarbonate is almost as scratch resistant as ordinary glass and graffiti can be removed using solvents. The new coating has also solves the only real drawback of the first generation of polycarbonate, where the material went slightly cloudy over time. This polycarbonate has been certified according to Security Class P8B (equivalent to the highest safety rating for grilles and rolling shutters). To be certified, the product needed to withstand 70 axe blows. After 72 axe blows the test was abandoned, with the axe having to be removed from the glass twice with a forklift truck!
With polycarbonate, big savings can be made in places like petrol stations, shops, restaurants, schools and anywhere else where windows are often broken by burglars or vandals. Video (Jewellers in Sweden) – As this video demonstrated, polycarbonate is very tough and the thieves soon
To summarise, now we have completed this presentation hopefully you should now have a full awareness of the current window security standards, the types of window security products available and which products would be the most suitable for consideration to be specified for your projects.
