John 13
John 13:1-7;34-35 niv
Your purpose is to love.
John 13:1 niv
It was just before the Passover Feast.
Jesus knew that the time had come for
him to leave this world and go to the
Father. Having loved his own who were
in the world, he now showed them the
full extent of his love.
John 13:1 niv
It was just before the Passover Feast.
Jesus knew that the time had come for
him to leave this world and go to the
Father. Having loved his own who were
in the world, he now showed them the
full extent of his love.
John 13:2-3 niv
The evening meal was being served, and
the devil had already prompted Judas
Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus.
Jesus knew that the Father had put all
things under his power, and that he had
come from God and was returning to God;
John 13:4-5 niv
so he got up from the meal, took off his
outer clothing, and wrapped a towel
around his waist. After that, he poured
water into a basin and began to wash his
disciples' feet, drying them with the towel
that was wrapped around him.
Jesus knew that the Father had put all
things under his power, and that he had
come from God and was returning to God;
John 13:3 niv
Jesus serves out of security.
John 13:6-8 niv
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,
"Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what
I am doing, but later you will understand."
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my
feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you,
you have no part with me."
It is important to learn how to receive.
Rather than trusting in your love for the
Lord, receive, rely upon, and rest in on
the Lord’s love for you.
Jesus replied, "You do not realize now
what I am doing, but later you will
understand.”
John 13:7 niv
Be at peace. There’s a purpose.
"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash
my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I
wash you, you have no part with me."
John 13:8 niv
Titus 3:4-5 nkj
But when the kindness and the love of God
our Savior toward man appeared,
not by works of righteousness which we
have done, but according to His mercy He
saved us, through the washing of
regeneration and renewing of the Holy
Spirit,
Jesus isn’t serving us out of duty
He serves us out of vision.
He has a vision for you of a higher purpose.
Your vision for you is too small.
John 13:12-13 niv
When he had finished washing their feet,
he put on his clothes and returned to his
place. "Do you understand what I have
done for you?" he asked them. ”You call
me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for
that is what I am.
John 13:12-16a niv
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also should wash
one another's feet. I have set you an
example that you should do as I have
done for you. I tell you the truth, no
servant is greater than his master,
John 13:16b-17 niv
nor is a messenger greater than the one
who sent him. Now that you know these
things, you will be blessed if you do them.
1. We are called to unattractive action.
O Jesus … grant that, even if you are
hidden under the unattractive disguise of
anger, of crime, or of madness, I may
recognize you and say, "Jesus, you who
suffer, how sweet it is to serve you."
Mother Teresa
Not “your life for mine”
But “my life for yours”
"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love
anything, and your heart will be wrung and
possibly broken. If you want to be sure of
keeping your heart intact, you must give
your heart to no one, not even an animal.
Wrap it carefully around with hobbies and
little luxuries, avoid all entanglements.
Lock it up safely in the casket of your
selfishness.
And in that casket, safe, dark, motionless,
airless, it will not change, it will not be
broken. It will become unbreakable,
impenetrable and irredeemable. The only
place outside of heaven where you can be
perfectly safe from the dangers of love is
hell."

2. Our purpose is not just surface level
serving, but emotional investment.
…remember that the dullest and most
uninteresting person you can talk to may
one day be a creature which, if you saw it
now, you would be strongly tempted to
worship, or else a horror and a corruption
such as you now meet, if at all, only in a
nightmare. All day long we are, in some
degree,
helping each other to one or other of these
destinations. It is in the light of these
overwhelming possibilities, it is with the
awe and the circumspection proper to
them, that we should conduct all our
dealings with one another, all friendships,
all loves, all play, all politics.
There are no ordinary people. You have
never talked to a mere mortal. Nations,
cultures, arts, civilizations--these are
mortal,... But it is immortals whom we joke
with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit--
immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.

3. Love and serve out of His fullness.
Romans 5:5b nkj
…the love of God has been poured out in
our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was
given to us.
Let Jesus wash your feet.
Fill your heart with
what He has done.
