REVISION COVER LETTER
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Each writer’s writing process is unique. Although categories exist—overwriters, underwriters,
etc.—each writer approaches their craft differently. And sometimes this process can even change
between projects.
Reflecting upon and understanding our own processes and writerly decisions are a crucial part to
allowing these systems to work at full capacity. Working to appreciate just what exactly you are
doing helps you trust in yourself as a writer and your process. At the forefront, it helps defend
against that inner critique that harasses you when you see you aren’t writing in the same way as
another, its nagging voice telling you that since you aren’t doing it like that, you must be wrong.
You are not wrong. You are you. And writing this cover letter for your long essay will help you
begin to discover who exactly that “you” is.
THIS ASSIGNMENT REQUIRES:
• At least one full page in length (single-spaced)
• Discussion of your writing process, both as a whole and uniquely to the process of this
piece
• Some level of self-reflection on the craft elements included in your piece
• Mention of inspirational pieces of writing/authors discovered in this class
• Creative flair is appreciated, as this is a creative writing class after all
FORMAT:
• 12-point, standard font
• Single-spaced
• Follow standard cover lever formatting conventions (examples are rampant online)
SUBMISSION:
• Include this letter as the first page of your final essay draft submission
• Submit both as one Word document file
o PDFs or other document types will not be accepted as it disallows margin
commenting
ASSESSMENT:
• This letter and attending your revision conference together are worth 100 points and will
be graded by adherence to these listed requirements
