There are so many scientifi c journals nowadays, it is understandably challenging for the untrained eye
to be able to discern the good ones from the bad ones. Sometimes it’s hard for the well-trained eye too.
A major shift in scientifi c publishing happened in the last decade with the introduction of open access
publishing model. The model is a superb way to disseminate the knowledge but it has also given an
unfortunate rise of online journals that fall under the category of ‘predatory’ journals
This presentation was provided by Kathleen Shearer of COAR, during the NISO Event "Open Access: The Role and Impact of Preprint Servers," held November 14 - 15, 2019.

Jessica Polka - The future of Peer Review | OpenUP Final ConferenceOpenUP project
Jessica Polka talking about the future of Peer Review at the OpenUP Final Conference. Jessica Polka is Executive Director of ASAPbio, a researcher-driven non-profit working to promote innovation and transparency in life sciences communication. ASAPbio aims to accelerate cultural change in two areas: preprints and open peer review reports. She became a visiting scholar at the Whitehead Institute and a research affiliate at MIT Libraries following postdoctoral research in synthetic biology at the Harvard Medical School and a PhD in biochemistry and cell biology at the University of California, San Francisco.
A few words about OpenUP Final Conference - Review | Assess | Disseminate
OpenUP Final Conference is the final conference of the EU funded H2020 project OpenUP. In OpenUP Final Conference, key aspects and challenges of the currently transforming science landscape were showcased in different interactive sessions, including an Open Science Cafe and Marketplace for new and innovative tools, methods and ideas. Different Motivate and Meet sessions fostered interaction and exchange in the context of Open Science.
It brought together different stakeholders who have a "stake" in the researcher lifecycle and helped them to learn about innovative methods for peer review, dissemination of research results and impact measurement, and get involved in shaping open science policies meeting their needs.

Keynote presentation at the 3º Simpósio Brasileiro de Comunicação Científica: Perspectivas em Acesso Aberto, http://www.sbcc.ufsc.br 05 e 06 de junho de 2012, Florianópolis (SC) – Brasil.
2012 marks the tenth anniversary of the Budapest Open Access Initiative, a declaration that provided a formal definition of Open Access (OA) and a set of strategies for archiving OA. This talk begins with a review of the major milestones of achievement over the last decade, both globally and with specific attention to Brazil and Latin America, followed by identification of key areas of research communication that remained to be improved. These areas include infrastructural development for e-research, more diverse and transparent metrics for evaluating scholarship, funding and institutional policy alignment, and new forms of scholarly practices and representation. Examples from these areas will be highlighted, with emphasis on areas of collaboration between information scientists and scholars from various fields.
It appears highly probable that immediate open access publishing
will become the default mode for scholarly publishing – for the
biosciences first, other sectors later. ‘Immediate’ open access
means unfettered publication as soon as a scholarly work is
ready, with no embargo period. The costs of making a scholarly
artefact available can be reduced without sacrificing quality. This
interactive session will sketch the argument for these claims and
will present several value-added services that publishers could
develop to thrive in an open access world.
Workshop on OGC Compliance at GEOBUIZ Summit 2016Luis Bermudez
Standards play an important role in ensuring quality solutions for governments and businesses around the world. However did you know that when it comes to OGC standards you can request certified compliance for those solutions? An example where this used is the standards recommended by the Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Standards Working Group in the United States, which includes standards developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). The OGC has certified hundreds of products and maintains an online database with detailed information about the products that implement and comply with OGC standards.
The workshop will provide resources and tools that are required to understand the importance and verification of OGC Compliance. Topics include:
- Benefits of acquiring OGC compliant products, as opposed to products that implement OGC standards but have not been certified as being OGC compliant
- Guidance regarding language to use in specifying requirements for OGC compliant products in software acquisition (procurement) documents
- Verification process to access that a product is compliant
- Overview of the testing and compliance procedure
- Testing community profiles

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
