Latino Dropout: What are doing about it?Andrew Behnke
This document discusses Latino dropout rates and challenges. It notes that the Latino population in the US grew significantly from 13 million in 1980 to over 50 million in 2012 and is projected to reach 92 million by 2030. Latino youth are also growing rapidly. The document identifies some of the personal, family, peer, and discrimination-related reasons why Latino students dropout, such as teen pregnancy, economic issues, language struggles, peer influences, and lack of a safe school climate. It provides suggestions for how to address the high dropout rate, including focusing on building strong relationships through personalismo and caring, engaging both youth and their parents, using technology and media to retain youth, and conducting home visits.
Aerobic respiration occurs in four major steps: glycolysis, acetyl CoA production, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Glycolysis breaks down glucose into pyruvate. Pyruvate then forms acetyl CoA which enters the Krebs cycle to produce ATP, NADH, and FADH2. These electron carriers then feed into the electron transport chain to produce more ATP through oxidative phosphorylation. Anaerobic respiration involves glycolysis followed by either alcohol fermentation, where pyruvate forms ethanol and CO2, or lactic acid fermentation, where pyruvate forms lactate.
The document discusses strategies for engaging Latino youth in the United States. It notes that the Latino population, especially among youth, is rapidly growing. Some challenges Latino youth face include difficulties obtaining driver's licenses, immigration raids, lack of job opportunities, and isolation from resources. The document then provides recommendations for engaging Latino youth, such as building relationships with community partners, hiring bilingual staff, creating flexible programs, learning some Spanish, and listening to youth to understand what interests them. The overall message is that organizations need diverse, culturally competent approaches to effectively engage the growing Latino youth population in the US.
This document discusses how to help families prepare for emergency situations. It provides tips for creating a family emergency plan including designating a meeting place, having important documents and cash on hand, and learning how to shut off utilities. It also offers advice for talking to children of different ages about disasters in an age-appropriate way, such as limiting media exposure for young kids and encouraging discussion among teens. The document stresses the importance of practicing plans with children and seeking help if needed.
Prefixes and suffixes are affixes that can be added to words to change their meaning. Prefixes are added before the word, while suffixes are added after. The document provides examples of common prefixes and their meanings, as well as noun, verb and adjective suffixes and their meanings. The document discusses the history of chocolate, from its origins in Mesoamerica to its popularity in Europe. It details how the Maya and Aztecs cultivated the cocoa bean and used it in drinks. The Spanish conquest brought cocoa and chocolate drinks to Europe in the 16th century, where it became a popular luxury item. By the 19th century, industrialization made chocolate affordable for the masses through the development of techniques like conching and tempering.
