Pall-Ex is a Palletised Freight Distribution Network which specialises in the distribution of small consignment/part loads (e.g. 1-6 pallets per consignment). Pall-Ex was established in 1996. We work on a hub-and-spoke operational methodology. The Hub is centrally located in the heart of England in Leicestershire and each of its spoke terminals (or member depots) being sourced and recruited from all over the UK to cover local collection and delivery activities. Today, Pall-Ex handles circa 9000 pallets every night, each one being delivered through our network. As an overview, each of our members collect freight from their local area, during the day the proceed to consolidate this and at the appropriate time in the early evening each member runs at least one trailer into the hub facility. Here the freight is transhipped Member depots take the freight back to their depots for onward delivery to the end customer. Who we are
Our approach Pall-Ex Retail Plus+ allows us to trunk product directly from retailers regional distribution centres, to our hub and on to high street stores, or even direct from suppliers to our hub and onto a store network. Increased Efficiency The Pall-Ex Retail Plus+ service makes a significant contribution to reducing the associated costs around retail stock by leveraging our flexibility of daily pallet deliveries to meet our customers’ needs. By working in partnership with our retail customers and their suppliers Pall-Ex now delivers an intelligent, cost saving end-to-end stock delivery facility. Reduced Carbon Footprint More and more customers are conscious of their carbon footprint and are examining what they, as an organisation are doing to minimise the impact their operation makes. Better management of all the discarded packaging, cardboard, bubble and shrink wrap is just one way businesses can demonstrate they are doing their part. So now, instead of having to work with a waste management company (another supplier and another vehicle coming in and out of your premises) Pall-Ex will take away all the packing waste and recycle it in a highly environmentally friendly way as part of the Pall-Ex Eco-Drive partnership with the greenhouse.
Many of Britain’s leading retailers are already shrinking operating costs by using the Pall-Ex Retail Plus+ service because it can lead to: Discarding present in-house distribution system Substantial savings on associated vehicle fleet, running and staff costs Valuable reduction in your carbon footprint Improved stock room space management Reduced health and safety risk Leveraging your logistics through Pall-Ex existing route activity With daily/next day timed delivery, Pall-Ex can ship your quarter, half or full pallet loads, with just the stock retail stores really need. Pall-Ex delivering cost savings to the Retail sector
The Body Shop, is seeing its environmental credentials strengthened even further thanks to it utilising the services of Pall-Ex. The Body Shop has been working in successful partnership with Pall-Ex for almost five years, with the nationwide network delivering a whole range of products to more than 300 shops across the country. Pall-Ex delivers goods to the door of each of The Body Shop’s high street stores, unwrapping the freight and then decanting and delivering it into storerooms and recycling the packaging.    With a fantastic reputation for its commitment to helping to save the environment, The Body Shop recognised the need to use a distribution solution that was not only practical and cost effective, but one that also reduced its carbon footprint. Mike Ricketts, Head of Global Transportation, from The Body Shop commented: “We know that by using Pall-Ex, there is more flexibility in terms of flowing deliveries from our regional distribution centre. We also have confidence that when we need to distribute goods quickly, Pall-Ex can complete the work. Prior to working with Pall-Ex our fleet comprised 14 permanent vehicles, rising to 40-50 during seasonal peaks. By choosing to outsource through a palletised freight distribution network, we Calculate that we make annual savings of 890 tonnes of CO2. Clearly this is good for our ethos and green credentials, and it’s also good for the planet.” Case Study

Editor's Notes

  • #2 THE OPPORTUNITY Ladies and gentlemen, I am here today to compete for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and to try to convey to you why I think I am worthy of this title. Nearly twelve years ago, I identified an opportunity in transport & logistics, grabbed and developed that opportunity and Pall-Ex was born. Pall-Ex has been trading for 11 years this year! The concept came to me whilst I was sat in a traffic office in South Wales, waiting to discuss with the owner of the company a nominated carrier scheme on behalf of a major retailer I was consulting for at that time. I overheard a very ‘everyday conversation’ taking place, the same conversation that happened in every hauliers traffic office all over the country. Very simply a customer was requesting for a 3 palletised consignments to be delivered to Scotland, the traffic clerk accepted the booking advised the customer that it would take approximately 10 days to arrive there; he then proceeded to make dozens of phone calls to his other customers, asking if they also had any goods to be delivered to Scotland. I suddenly began to think of the environmental cost, inefficiencies, to everyone, the problem impacted greatly on the country as a whole, environmentally, because of the number of vehicles running partially empty, the cost of these journeys. And of course the inefficiency to the haulier, the manufacturer, and of course the customer.
