7. COVER LETTER
In a recent survey of 150 executives from the nation's 1,000
largest companies, 60 percent of the respondents said that
when they screen applications, the cover letter is either as
important as or MORE critical than the resume. Your cover
letter really does matter !!!!!
Cover letters explain what you can’t and don’t know how to
convey in a resume, for example: why is all your experience for
8 years in Texas and now you live in Hawaii ?? Why are you
here? Interviewers will wonder and your cover letter can
provide the answer for them.

SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
8. WRITING AN EFFECTIVE COVER LETTER
The cover letter is where you can think outside the box &
really stand out from the crowd.
Think about 2 things when writing it:
. How exciting this job is to you and why
you want it
. How excited they will be to meet you &
hire you
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
9. COVER LETTER
This is the place to describe anything about yourself that
would be inappropriate on the résumé, for example:
“I love the symphony and have had season tickets for 10
years. Although I have no professional experience in the
Art and Music industry, it is my intention to redirect my
career into the music field…”
Don't underestimate the importance of the cover letter.

SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
10. WHEN EMAILING OR FAXING:
RESUME AND COVER LETTER
• Microsoft Word – because everyone can open
• Don’t put images like logos, etc. in resumes or emails
• Don’t use Italics
• Use same fonts throughout each document
• Preferably use font size 12
• Use common Font like Times New Roman
• Try to call to confirm receipt or have Outlook give you a
receipt confirmation
Always – unless instructed otherwise – include a cover letter
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
11. HOW TO IMPRESS WITH YOUR RESUME
AND COVER LETTER
• Focus On the Employer’s Need’s - Not Yours =
F O E N N Y
Remember “FOENNY” we will refer to it often
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
12. REMEMBER
The first lines of your Résumé will make or
break you.
And will determine if the resume goes in the
“Hot Candidate” file or the trash CAN !!!
There is no second chance to say “Can I re-do
my resume and resend it you?”
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
13. ACCURACY & HONESTY
Make sure that you can back up what you say.
Communicate who you are and what you can do at your very
best.
Brag about yourself!!
In fact, you are being foolish if you seek to convey a careful,
balanced portrayal of yourself.
YOU WANT TO KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF!
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
14. HAVE A PLAN
• Gather all information needed before you begin typing,
composing, creating
• Focus your writing efforts
(how can I demonstrate that I’m the perfect candidate?
What is perfect to them? What is special about me?)
• Loosen up your thinking
• Ask your friends, family co-workers
ex-bosses what makes or made you
a good employee, a “star”; Listen to
them; use what they tell you

16. WHAT AM I GOOD AT?
I’M NOT SURE I’M EXTRAORDINARY AT ANYTHING
Remember:
What an employer pays you for is to perform some
special function or functions.
Everything one does at work, from flipping burgers to
understanding the most obscure abstract data, is a
specific work function. Most careers involve combining
a few different functions together.

17. Everyone is born with a certain degree of talent for
each of the hundreds of possible work functions.
Think about it for a minute. Notice that there are
some things that seem to come easily to you and
others that are much more difficult to deal with.
Your innate talent for any specific function may be
100% or only 1%. Almost every person is naturally
good at some things, pretty good at some others, and
not so good at yet other functions.

18. Those people who are very successful, who have no trouble writing a
powerful and sincere resume are people who have discovered what they are
naturally good at.
It is as simple as that.
Just review your own life and think about what you like to do, what people
have told you you’re good at then you uncover your true talents.
And, you can easily write a resume that honestly communicates that you are
the best candidate for the job - because you know you are.

21. CHRONOLOGICAL & FUNCTIONAL RESUMES
Most Interviewers and HR Staff prefer a Chronological Resume because it
clearly indicates what you did where and when and for whom all in one
section, whereas Functional Resumes indicate your functions separately from
the job where you performed those functions. Therefore interviewer must
search among jobs listed and try to determine which function was done at
which job – this is time consuming and frustrating.
HOWEVER, if a Chronological resume makes you look like a job hopper or
emphasizes a shaky work history, or if you don’t have much work
experience, then a Functional Resume will work better for you. Try them
both and see how they look. Take your time working on this. It is very, very
important.

THREE MAIN SECTIONS
The Objective
The Summary
The History

WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
25. A GREAT RESUME HAS
THREE MAIN SECTIONS
The Objective
• Clarify your objective
• Why are you the perfect candidate?
• Good advertising is directed towards a very specific target
audience. You want to focus your resume just as
specifically: who is your target audience? Is it always HR or
is it a Sales Manager? Vice President/Head of Engineering?
• The objective provides clarity for the reader.
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
26. – The point of using an objective is to create a specific
psychological response in the mind of the reader: What is
Candidate looking to gain, achieve? What is Candidate’s
goal?
– Can what candidate wants match what we want and can
offer?
– Be very clear and straight forward in your objective.
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
27. – Decide on a specific job title for your objective. Think about:
“How can I demonstrate that I am the perfect candidate?” What
are the two or three qualities, abilities or achievements that
would make me as a candidate stand out as truly exceptional for
that specific job: think about the company and it’s job
description. Write your objective with the company’s
advertisement or job posting in mind. Use their wording.
– Be absolutely clear about what you want and can offer.
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
28. – Use “key words” in your objective and resume, i.e., if you are
applying for a data entry clerk you should have “clerk” or “data
entry” in your resume. Many companies do “Key Word”
searches to select resumes.
– Especially if you are applying for a job doing something you have
not ever done, you should have key words describing the job in
your objective because the words will not appear in the
experience portion of your resume.
BISHOP & COMPANY, INC. 841 BISHOP STREET,
SUITE 1614 HONOLULU, HI 96813
WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
29. – You should customize your resume and cover letter to each
type of job you apply for. There is nothing wrong with having
several different resumes, each with a different objective, each
specifically crafted for a different type of position, emphasizing
different aspects of your experience and/or education.
– Remember, you are writing advertising copy to sell yourself, not
writing your life story.

WWW.BISHOPCO.NET 808-839-2200
30. The Summary
Focus on your qualifications, achievements and abilities
SPICE IT UP!!! But Keep it Real!!
The summary consist of several concise statements (use bullet
points) that focus the reader’s attention on the most
important qualities, achievements and abilities you have to
offer as they relate to the job advertised!!! If you are a
great piano player don’t focus on that if the job is for
Service Manager at a Veterinary Clinic.

31. The Summary
The summary provides you with a valuable chance to attract
and hold the employer’s attention, to get across what is
important, and to entice the employer to keep reading. Should
be the spiciest part of your resume.

Editor's Notes
Who knows the purpose?
It’s not your personal history that they’re looking for….
.It is a mistake to think of your resume as a history of your past, as a personal statement or some sort of self expression unless you’re applying for a creative writing job!
.Write from the intention to create interest, to persuade the employer to call you. If you write with that goal, your final product will be very different than if you write to inform or catalog your job history.
**.Research has shown that only one interview is granted for every 200 resumes received by the average employer. In addition, research tells us that your resume will be quickly scanned, rather than read. 10 to 20 seconds is all the time you have to persuade a prospective employer to read further.
Pause & Repeat 1st paragraph
.The decision to interview a candidate is usually based on an overall first impression of the resume, a quick screening which so impresses the reader and convinces them of the candidate’s qualifications that an interview results.
.By the time they have read the first few lines, you have either caught their interest , or your resume has failed.
.Get over your modesty and unwillingness to toot your own horn. Why do you buy certain products? People more often buy the best advertised product than they buy the best product.
.Imagine that you are the person who will be doing the hiring. Ask yourself: what would make someone the perfect candidate? What special abilities would this person have? What would set a truly exceptional candidate apart from a merely good one?
.Start to answer these? Now in your mind – then write down 3 outstanding attributes.
.For each job, get clear what the employer is looking for and what you have to offer before you begin your resume.
.You may create a basic generic resume to work from but should customize for each jobs.
.The whole idea is to loosen up your thinking enough so that you will be able to see some new connections between what you have done and what the employer is looking for.
.Very important part of the planning process it to decide which resume format (samples to follow) fits your needs best. Don’t automatically assume that a traditional format will work best for you.
.Verify that employment addresses and phone #’s are current.
.Decide how much of an employment history you want to add (varies with employer).
**Pass out handouts
**Pause for review/reading
See, fairly similar – yet very different b/c each of you are unique and distinctly different.
.
.
.
.Let them know what results you produced, what happed as a result of your efforts, what you are especially gifted or experienced at doing.
.You are still writing to do what every good advertisement does, communicating the following: if you buy this product, you will get these direct benefits. Remember, not too much detail.
.Put your skills and accomplishments in order of importance for the desired career goal.
.There is not a section called evidence. By evidence, we mean all the mandatory information you must include on your resume: chronological work history with dates, education, affiliations, list of software mastered, etc.
.All of these items are best placed in the second half of the resume. Put the hot stuff in the beginning and all this less exciting information afterward.
.A great resume has no evidence section. It is all one big assertions section. Every single word is crafted to have the desired effect, to get them to pick up the phone and call you. It is one big ad disguised as a history or your working life.
.Summarize a number of the earliest jobs in one line or very short paragraph, or list only the bare facts with no position description.
.Decide how much of employment history you want to add
.Set degrees apart so they are easily seen.
.Put in boldface whatever will be most impressive.
.Do not include any details about college except major and awards, unless you are still in college or just recently graduated.
.Include grade point average only if over 3.4 & list selected course work if this will help convince the reader of your qualifications for the targeted job.
.Do include advanced training, but be selective with the information, summarizing the information and including only what will be impressive for the reader.
.If you are working on an uncompleted degree, include the degree and in afterwards, parentheses the expected date of completion.
.If you didn’t finish college, start with a phrase describing the field studied, then the school, then the dates.
.If the only awards received were in school, put these under the Education section.
.If you have received commendations or praise from very senior source, you could call this section, “Awards and Commendations”. Quote the source, quote the commendation
e.g. “my last boss stated I was the answer to a prayer” because I reorganized the entire filing system.
.Take the time to think about praise you have received in the past.
.Good section to include to get across your status as a member of a minority targeted for special consideration by employers.
.This is good to include especially if the leadership roles or accomplishments are related to the job; however, civic/community involvement almost always is a positive reflections of you – as long as it is not a controversial involvement.
.Advantages: Can indicate a skill or area or knowledge which is related to the goal, such a photography for someone in public relations. Can show well-roundedness, good physical health, or knowledge of a subject related to the goal. Can create common ground or spark conversation in an interview.
e.g. no musical experience or education but a primary interest.
.Disadvantages: Are usually irrelevant to the job goal and resume purpose, and may be meaningless or an interview turn off.
.Avoid: Prison Terms or other highly confidential information, Marital status/sexual preference, other classified material.
.This is a standard close, but is not necessary as it is usually assumed.
.A references list can be done as a separate sheet and brought to the interview to be given to the employer if requested – very good idea plus you should have already thought about what your previous employers would say about you & decided which person (besides HR department) you will use as a reference. Plus you should have already contacted them & asked their agreement to provide a good reference for you. When you call to ask them, take opportunity to ask them what might be an asset they observed.
