Module 6 discussion- Reply to M The four reasons for sentencing are Retribution, Deterrence, Incapacitation, and Rehabilitation. Retribution is the punishment for knowingly breaking society’s rules. Deterrence is like retribution, but instead of just punishment for the crime, the idea is preventing the crime from happening again in the future with the sentencing chosen. Incapacitation is defined as harsher sentencing for crimes that in hopes will deter others from committing the same crime in society. Rehabilitation is using programs within the prisons to help the inmates make a change within themselves so that when they are released they will no longer be a threat to themselves or their community. In the case from the text I saw that the deterrence philosophy was in use. They got such long sentences to be used as an example and to try and deter others from committing the same crime. When it comes to non-violent crimes I think that if more rehabilitation is put into action and the programs are actually worked with non-violent offenders, they should not receive such lengthy sentences. I understand the point of deterrence but at the same time the extreme long sentences should be there for violent offenders, there are already overcrowded prisons as it is. The federal sentencing guidelines were put into place to “remove judicial bias from the sentencing process” (Gaines & Miller, 2017, Cengage Learning). These guidelines have become harsher than they were before by far. The average Federal sentence in 2004 was fifty months which was more than doubled since 1984 (Gaines & Miller, 2017, Cengage Learning). The trend from our text that applies to the case is inmates serving more time. They were given quite the lengthy sentence for a non-violent crime. Decarceration is the attempt to lower the incarceration rates. There are three different ways to go about doing this and they are: decreasing the chances that nonviolent offenders will return to prison, increasing the number of nonviolent offenders released from prison, and decreasing prison sentences for probation and parole violations. I agree with the Decarceration trends, as they are helping to alleviate the numbers of people in prisons for nonviolent crimes so that we have the room to keep the violent offenders out of our communities. 2. The field of corrections, which will be the topic in this next set of three chapters, encompasses county and state jails, prisons, community corrections, including probation and parole, and various correctional programs. Correctional professionals, like law enforcement and legal professionals, have a great deal of discretion and power over the lives of offenders.
As you may know, the United States has about 2.1 million people in jails and prisons. We incarcerate many more people per capita than other western, industrialized countries. At a rate of about 700 per 100,000, the United States incarcerates about seven times more people than Norway (72), France (98), or Canada (118) and a little less than five times more people than the United Kingdom (147) (Wagner and Walsh, 2016).
The reason our imprisonment rate is so much higher is not because of higher crime, but, because of our inclination to punish with incarceration rather than any other sentencing alternative (Raphael and Stoll, 2008). A careful analysis of sentencing patterns by Pfaff (2011) shows that the dramatic increase in
incarceration rates that began in the 1980s was largely due to the decision of prosecutors to seek prison terms for convicted individuals, and, to a lesser extent, increased sentence length and changes in parole release and revocation.
Further, we were roughly comparable to other countries in our punishment practices until the 1980s, at which time the incarceration rates increased dramatically every year. Recently, the rate and numbers in prison have plateaued, and many states, have even showed decreases in the number incarcerated (Kaeble and Glaze, 2016; Pollock, 2016). The number incarcerated in jail or prison decreased by 2.3 percent from 2014 and was its lowest level since 2004 (Kaeble and Glaze, 2016). Some states have created double-digit declines since 1999, including New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and California. Interestingly, states’ decrease or increase in the number of people imprisoned does not seem to show any correlation with whether the state’s crime rate has increased or decreased (Pew Research Center, 2016).
While the incarceration rate per 100,000 is 466 for white men, it is 1,130 for Hispanic men and an amazing 2,791 for black men. Women are incarcerated at a much lower rate: 51 per 100,000 white women are incarcerated, compared to 65 for Hispanic women and 113 per 100,000 for black women (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2015). At year-end 2015 an estimated 6,741,400 persons were supervised by U.S. adult correctional systems (prison, jail, probation, or parole). This is a decrease of about 115,600 persons from year-end 2014 and represents almost 3 percent of the total adult population. The interested reader can go to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (https://bjs.gov/) to see how imprisonment patterns have changed over the years.
It is important to emphasize that the imprisonment patterns we see are a function of individual discretion on the par.

Abstract
The criminal justice system is the set of agencies and processes established by governments to control crime and impose penalties on those who violate laws. There is no single criminal justice system in the United States however similar, individual systems. How the criminal justice system works in each area depends on the jurisdiction in charge be that of city, state, county, federal or tribal government or military installation. Various jurisdictions have different laws, agencies, and ways of managing criminal justice processes. In the criminal justice system there are corrections institutions which are housing facilities for those individuals who have violated the law (The Criminal Justice System, 2015). Currently, there is a great deal of money being spent in the United States on those who are incarcerated. For example, over 2.3 million Americans which is about one percent of the population are incarcerated, the cost is about twenty three thousand dollars per year to house and feed each prisoner (Muraskin, 2010). In addition, the criminal justice system is faced with a plethora of issues in terms of punishments imposed, deterrence and in the correctional institutions, issues that involve the care and treatment of offenders. In this paper I will discuss punishment, forecasted issues and trends and whether or not there is a danger to the community.
The government has spent millions of dollars in attempting to find ways to deter crime. They have implemented various programs both educational and community –based. I believe that the concept is to reduce recidivism, deter crime and at the same time prepare offenders while incarcerated, to return to society and become productive members. In American prisons the two most widely used modes of treatment are education and work programs. The occurrence of these programs reflects the permanent belief that educational, work skills and good habits learned in acquiring such skills plays an integral role for offenders securing employment and becoming productive citizens.
Although the results are not clear, the existing research generally suggests that the programs do have an impact in reducing post release recidivism, especially when targeted particularly at inmates who possess low skills and when part of a broader strategy –a multi-model approach which is behavior therapy in psychotherapy to rehabilitating offenders (Rehabilitation- Corrections in The United States, 2015). I think that there are some people in society who would argue that spending millions on criminals is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars because they are a lost cause. I would have to disagree because they have to start somewhere. Sadly, for some the starting point is while incarcerated. The general public has an expectation that those people that cannot conform to the
basic rules and law of society be punished for their lack of regard for the law. The
concept of punishment versus reform is one that has been constantly debated for
hundreds of years. In this unit, we discuss the goals of sentencing as they relate to
punishment.
There are seven goals of punishment that you need to understand in this unit. They
are as follows:
revenge,
retribution,
just deserts,
deterrence,
incapacitation,
rehabilitation or reformation, and
restoration.
There are also five sentencing options available to the offender:
fines and other monetary sanctions,
probation,
intermediate sanctions,
incarceration, and
death penalty.
One question we need to ask ourselves is, “do the five sentencing options fit into the
seven goals of punishment?” The death penalty does provide revenge, but does it

Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

The history reveals that he was in his usual state of good health until approximately 1 week ago when he developed a profound cough. His parents say that it is deep and sounds like he is barking. He coughs so hard that sometimes he actually vomits. The cough is productive for mucus, but there is no blood in it. Kevin has had a low-grade temperature but nothing really high. I think this topic relates a lot to our discussion on what a “journalist” is and what sets them apart from pundits and bloggers, their obligation to present the truth. I can appreciate that Bella Stumbo chose to include the exact and direct quotes of Barry, accent and vernacular included. However, like all things there is a time, place, and reason. I believe that because Stumbo was writing a profile, she did the piece more justice by including the speech patterns. They show character and background in peripheral way. The rules for this week mentioned that grammatical mistakes should be used as they were spoken, but accents should not. There can be a fine line between those two. I’ve lived all over the world and I can tell you from experience, accents and vernacular combined can create something of a dialect. Regardless, we aren’t trying to be speech analysts, but writers. The audience and intention of the piece must always be considered. A running theme in the class has been to choose each word carefully, and if it doesn’t add to the story you don’t need it. For example, I found an article online that described Wendy Williams' reaction to a celebrity tryst:
‘It’s only been three weeks! And she’s 26! That’s old enough to understand—like, you don’t show your feelings on your sleeve in three weeks, you know? And he’s a 30-something.’
Here the writer is not only adding inflection or feeling by using multiple exclamation marks, but why add the “- li.

As informatics become more and more widespread throughout the health care field, collaboration between information technology (IT) professionals and health care practitioners is becoming increasingly important. The nurse informaticist is able to combine the perspective of the information technology side with the clinical nursing perspective.
While the titles and specific responsibilities of nurse informaticists vary across organizations and practice settings, the fundamental purpose of the role remains the same. Nurse informaticists synthesize their knowledge of how technology can improve health care with an understanding of clinical practice and workflow. This is why nurse informaticists can be instrumental in facilitating the SDLC for informatics in health care. In clinical settings, patients often present with various respiratory symptoms such as congestion, coughing, and wheezing. While identifying a symptom’s underlying illness can be challenging, it is essential because even basic symptoms such as persistent coughing can be a sign of a more severe disorder. Advanced practice nurses must be able to differentiate between moderate and severe respiratory disorders, as well as properly diagnose and prescribe treatment for their patients. For this reason, you must have an understanding of the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders.
Consider the following three scenarios:
Scenario 1:
Ms. Teel brings in her 7-month-old infant for evaluation. She is afraid that the baby might have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) because she seems to be coughing a lot, and Ms. Teel heard that RSV is a common condition for infants. A detailed patient history reveals that the infant has been coughing consistently for several months. It’s never seemed all that bad. Ms. Teel thought it was just a normal thing, but then she read about RSV. Closer evaluation indicates that the infant coughs mostly at night; and, in fact, most nights the baby coughs to some extent. Additionally, Ms. Teel confirms that the infant seems to cough more when she cries. Physical examination reveals an apparently healthy age- and weight-appropriate, 7-month-old infant with breath sounds that are clear to auscultation. The infant’s medical history is significant only for eczema that was actually quite bad a few months back. Otherwise, the only remarkable history is an allergic reaction to amoxicillin that she experienced 3 months ago when she had an ear infection.
Scenario 2:
Kevin is a 6-year-old boy who is brought in for evaluation by his parents. The parents are concerned that he has a really deep cough that he just can’t seem to get over. The history reveals that he was in his usual state of good health until approximately 1 week ago when he developed a profound cough. His parents say that it is deep and sounds like he is barking. He coughs so hard that sometimes he actually vomits. The cough is productive for mucus, but there is no blood in it. Kevin has had a low-grade temperature but nothing really high. His parents do not have a thermometer and don’t know for sure how high it got. His past medical history is negative. He has never had childhood asthma or RSV. His mother says that they moved around a lot in his first 2 years and she is not sure that his immunizations are up to date. She does not have a current vaccination record.
Scenario 3:
Maria is a 36-year-old who presents for evaluation of a cough. She is normally a healthy young lady with no significant medical history. She takes no medications and does not smoke. She reports that she was in her usual state of good health until approximately 3 weeks ago when she developed a “really bad cold.” The cold is characterized by a profound, deep, mucus-produci.

Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

Los Angeles Times,
was sharply criticized for quoting the late Washington, D.C., mayor Marion Barry using words like "wanna" instead of "want to" and "I be sittin'" instead of "I'll be sitting" in
her profile
of the politician.

I think this topic relates a lot to our discussion on what a “journalist” is and what sets them apart from pundits and bloggers, their obligation to present the truth. I can appreciate that Bella Stumbo chose to include the exact and direct quotes of Barry, accent and vernacular included. However, like all things there is a time, place, and reason. I believe that because Stumbo was writing a profile, she did the piece more justice by including the speech patterns. They show character and background in peripheral way. The rules for this week mentioned that grammatical mistakes should be used as they were spoken, but accents should not. There can be a fine line between those two. I’ve lived all over the world and I can tell you from experience, accents and vernacular combined can create something of a dialect. Regardless, we aren’t trying to be speech analysts, but writers. The audience and intention of the piece must always be considered. A running theme in the class has been to choose each word carefully, and if it doesn’t add to the story you don’t need it. For example, I found an article online that described Wendy Williams' reaction to a celebrity tryst:
‘It’s only been three weeks! And she’s 26! That’s old enough to understand—like, you don’t show your feelings on your sleeve in three weeks, you know? And he’s a 30-something.’
Here the writer is not only adding inflection or feeling by using multiple exclamation marks, but why add the “- li.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Module 6 discussion- Reply to M The four reasons for sentencing are Retribution, Deterrence, Incapacitation, and Rehabilitation. Retribution is the punishment for knowingly breaking society’s rules. Deterrence is like retribution, but instead of just punishment for the crime, the idea is preventing the crime from happening again in the future with the sentencing chosen. Incapacitation is defined as harsher sentencing for crimes that in hopes will deter others from committing the same crime in society. Rehabilitation is using programs within the prisons to help the inmates make a change within themselves so that when they are released they will no longer be a threat to themselves or their community. In the case from the text I saw that the deterrence philosophy was in use. They got such long sentences to be used as an example and to try and deter others from committing the same crime. When it comes to non-violent crimes I think that if more rehabilitation is put into action and the programs are actually worked with non-violent offenders, they should not receive such lengthy sentences. I understand the point of deterrence but at the same time the extreme long sentences should be there for violent offenders, there are already overcrowded prisons as it is.
- 2. The federal sentencing guidelines were put into place to “remove judicial bias from the sentencing process” (Gaines & Miller, 2017, Cengage Learning). These guidelines have become harsher than they were before by far. The average Federal sentence in 2004 was fifty months which was more than doubled since 1984 (Gaines & Miller, 2017, Cengage Learning). The trend from our text that applies to the case is inmates serving more time. They were given quite the lengthy sentence for a non-violent crime. Decarceration is the attempt to lower the incarceration rates. There are three different ways to go about doing this and they are: decreasing the chances that nonviolent offenders will return to prison, increasing the number of nonviolent offenders released from prison, and decreasing prison sentences for probation and parole violations. I agree with the Decarceration trends, as they are helping to alleviate the numbers of people in prisons for nonviolent crimes so that we have the room to keep the violent offenders out of our communities. 2. DISCUSSION 6 Reply to A In Chapter 11 you learned about the four basic philosophical reasons for sentencing criminals. Briefly discuss these four reasons in your own words. The 4 basic philosophical reasons are: Retribution: justice and punishments are done to who commits a crime- Just Deserts: meaning a punishment should be done on

Deterrence: preventing future crimes through the punishment Incapacitation: incarcerating criminals, this way there will be a safe society Rehabilitation: treatment for offenders. This function is for the people that commit a crime, these cases should receive medical rehabilitation in order to become a better person. (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 349,351,352). Which of these sentencing reasons is demonstrated in the stories of Timothy Tyler and Scott Walker? Discuss. Retribution and Just Deserts were used in Tyler and Walker, they both committed a crime of selling drugs, Deterrence, they both received the punishment of being in jail because the sale of drugs is not only damage to the society but also to our youth. They both received the punishment, not fair deserved because is a sentence where they can spend the rest of their lives in prison. “Scott Walker hopes that he can benefit from the updated clemency standards”. (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 348). Are there any circumstances under which you think a nonviolent criminal deserves to spend his/her life in prison? No, because when there is just punishment and the crime was not violent, there should not be a life sentence in prison, especially if there are no records of non-violent crimes and when there is no criminal record and it is the first time that the person violates the law. What sentencing philosophies are behind your reasoning? Just Deserts, because the person who commits a crime, violates the law should receive a fair punishment. Depending on how big or small a crime is, the crime must be punished.
- 4. Consider the structure of sentencing that you learned about in Chapter 11. What are federal sentencing guidelines and why were they created? Federal Sentencing Guidelines are rules established in an effort to eliminate incorrect decisions when dictating a sentence in a case, and they were created so that before issuing the sentence, the Judge must calculate the applicable range when sentencing those convicted of a specific crime. How did sentencing guidelines affect incarceration rates in the United States? Has affected the incarceration due to several factors, like the type of crime and the sentence. Also, the criminal history scale and the sentence. There are 2.2 million people in the nation’s prisons and jails —a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Changes in law and policy, not changes in crime rates, explain most of this increase. Decarceration, when there is a nonviolent case like Tyler and Walker case, they should be released from prison and not have a sentence of life prison. People who commit a non-violate crime and are still in jail with no criminal records should be released and give a second chance. What is decarceration? Is a method to reduce the number of offenders in prison. Do you agree with decarceration trends? Why or why not? Yes, because will decrease nonviolent offenders sentenced to
- 5. prison, increase the release of nonviolent offenders from prison and decrease the rate of imprisonment for probation and parole violators. (Gaines & Miller, 2017, p. 435). 3. Discussion 6 reply to J The basic philosophical reasons for sentencing criminals are retribution (wrongdoer must pay for their crimes), deterrence ( preventing crime through punishment), incapacitation ( sending wrongdoers to prison or jail), and rehabilitation ( offering treatments and programs to reintegrate them back into society). The retribution reasoning ( Tyler & Walker sold drugs in a society that does not accept that behavior) and the deterrence reasoning ( sending both Tyler and Walker to prison for life) were both demonstrated in the story of Timothy Tyler and Scott Walker. I do not think there is any reason to give nonviolent offenders or even habitual offenders life in prison, especially if there are programs in place to help people with their deviant behaviors (rehabilitation). The federal sentencing guidelines are expanding judicial discretion ( judges do not have to use the minimum sentence when determining a sentence for nonviolent drug crimes), limiting habitual offender ( committing the same crimes repeatedly), and repealing or revising mandatory minimum sentences ( eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for low level drug offender). Minorities for example, were affected by the harsh incarceration rated because they made of 70% of convicts that were subjected to the minimum sentencing guidelines.
- 6. Increased probability of incarceration is a inmate population trend that is relevant to the Tyler and Walker story. According to the article people are more likely to get arrested more today for drug and weapon offenses then they were back then, and that proves to be true in the case of Tyler and Walker. Decarceration is lowering incarceration rates. I agree with decarceration, not everyone needs to go to prison or jail especially if there not violent or only need for illness or substance abuse. Decarceration will also lower the cost of funds for prison and jail facilities and help alleviate the problem of overcrowded jails and prisons.
