Resources and Development
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT : Introduction
A country that uses its resources in the best way is said to be developed. The
resources we have can be natural or man-made.We use natural resources like
minerals and metals to build man-made resources such as machines. The use of
Natural Resources usually goes unchecked. Therefore many times we may
overuse them.Too much water drawn from the ground, too many trees cut
down, too much coal extracted and burnt, etc is depleting resources.Depleting
resources are a cause for concern.
2
We need to develop ways to use the resources in a way that will allow us to
benefit as well as the future to use them. This method of utilising resources
carefully for development is called Sustainable Development.
Sustainable Development means economic development that meets needs of
present without compromising needs of future. It requires coordinated
economic ,social and environmental efforts to develop sustainably.A sustainably
developed society is a balanced economy, with a healthy society and blooming
environment.

Earth
Summit,1992.
The First International Earth Summit
was organised in Rio De
Janeiro,Brazil,1992.
● It discussed the urgent
environmental and socio-
economic problems.
● More than 100 Head of States
signed Declaration of Global
Climate Change and Biological
Diversity.
● It also adopted Global Forest
Principle and Agenda 21.
4
Agenda 21
World Leaders at United Nations
Conference on Environment and
Development(UNCED) signed Agenda
21.
Agenda 21 is a formal announcement
made at UNCED.
● It plans programs to reduce
poverty,disease and damages.
● It also manages needs and shared
responsibilities of member
countries.
● It aims to achieve Sustainable
Development in 21st century.
● Its major aim is that every local
government should plan their own
Agenda 21.

Best Practices in Sustainability
While the vast majority of US companies are asleep at the wheel when it comes to facing up to
multiple sustainability challenges, a select group is waking up to the need for urgent action.
The following Companies have made attempts towards sustainability:
Water stewardship: Coca-Cola
The drinks company has improved the efficiency of its water use by 20% and identified the
need for a rigorous third-party evaluation of its water management approach.
Supply chain management: Ford Motor Company
The car company has established requirements for first-tier suppliers to drive its environmental
and social expectations further down the supply chain and works with suppliers to establish
GHG emission reduction and energy efficiency targets.
6
Design: Dell
The computer company's integrates alternative, recycled and recyclable materials in its product
and packaging design, improvements in energy efficiency, and design for end-of-life and
recyclability. One of the company's commitments is to reduce the energy intensity of its product
portfolio by 80% by 2020.
Greenhouse gas emission reductions: Adobe
The software company aims to achieve a 75% reduction, from 2000 levels, in company
emissions by 2015. It is using renewable energy technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells and
solar arrays, and is also focused on reducing energy needs by improving the cooling efficiency
of its data centers and "virtualizing" many of its systems, platforms and devices.
Since 2017, Adobe has decreased its total energy consumption by over 10,000 MWh and
decreased GHG emissions by 1000 tonnes. They're on track with their commitment to achieve
100 percent renewable energy by 2035.
7
Features/Advantages of sustainable development
include:
● A sustained rise in per capita income (PCI) worldwide
● Rational usage of resources
● Pollutional checks
● Population control
● Relative dependence on renewable sources of energy to meet future
generation’s needs
8
Disadvantages of Sustainable Development are:
● Increased Costs
● Lower Quality of Life for Some Elements of the Society
● Resistance to New Methods:Example:To get more electricity, industrialists may
want more dams. But this may submerge the land and disrupt the lives of people
who are displaced - such as tribals.
● Increased Regulation
● Political Struggle

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Natural resources are those freely available in the environment and nature.Man-made resources are those made and used by us for production and consumption.
  • #3 It refers to using resources in a responsible way so that even future generations can use them.balanced economy-cost efficient with increased pci ,healthy society-safe and disease free, environment friendly-decreases pollution. The quote was presented in 1990 by Ralph Waldo Emerson ,he was an american essayist and a poet
  • #7 Since 2017, Adobe has decreased its total energy consumption by over 10,000 MWh and decreased GHG emissions by 1000 tonnes. We're on track with our commitment to achieve 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and are proud of the progress we've made so far.May 8, 2019They have achieved one of our 2020 sustainability goals in full this year when we planted our 1 millionth tree to offset carbon emissions and restore natural animal habitats.
  • #9 Because sustainable development relies on newer technologies and materials that cost more to produce, the overall costs are often more than that of traditional construction.Sustainable development will shrink or do away with certain job sectors. This will lead to job loss for some workers. The fossil fuel industry could see plants close and employees lose jobs as sustainable development relies on new energy sources. When people try to implement new ideas, there’s naturally a certain amount of resistance. People in general are set in their ways and do because they see the overall benefit, many people will disagree with government intruding into their lives. In addition to the public resistance, there’s a political cost to committing to the environment. Some politicians will be completely against sustainable development.
  • #10 Asia in an average has considerebly good sdg Australia South america Africa-has low sdg North am,erica Europe
  • #11 ITo be sustainable ,we need to identify and improve areas where there is waste of resources.Waste Management needs to improve. We have to follow : Reduce Reuse Refuse-especially plastic Environmental and social awareness needs to be spread to reduce the problem of depleting resources and social problems too.Proper measures must be taken to ensure using of resources to the maximum capacity needed by a firm, but which will not negatively affect the environment. Let us all work towards a Sustainable Society. We have 5 P’s which together will help us buiild a sustainable society
