My interview involved Mrs.
Cardenas, a professional
teacher from Carnahan elementary
school ISD located in San Antonio, Texas.
Wh0 did I interview?
My first question to Mrs. Cardenas was
whether or not it is
possible for a teacher to deny giving a
parent permission to see his/her
child’s educational records.
Question one:
Her answer was, ”yes, however,” ,she added,” there
are other things to be considered. Notably, a child
who is in high school level and below cannot hide
his/her educational records from the parents not
unless he is above 18 years of age, and A college or a
university student who is above 18 years can decide to
hide their records from the parents for as long as
they want. II think it is vital to keep students’
personal data confidential by getting written consent
from them before releasing their information, which
includes the academic record.”
Her response:
This information has enlightened me
since I am now aware that I can file a
formal grievance with the US
Department of Education whenever I
feel my rights have been infringed. I
would expect my instructor to contact me
when my academic records are
to be released to any agency.
What did I learn from her response?
My second question to the teacher was
whether or not teachers can be
punished for causing physical injury to a
student when trying to inflict the
corporal punishment which is lawful.
Question Two:
Her response was,”corporal punishment is made to
discipline learners, and should not involve
the use of deadly force. Teachers should always
maintain a good relationship with their students.”
Additionally, she told me that the use of excessive
force could lead to disciplinary action.
Her response:
I believe using excessive force to control
classroom
misbehavior can affect academic performance
negatively. For this reason, the law protects
learners to ensure a safe learning environment.
The information I have gathered from my
interview will help me to inform my students on
their rights so that when a teacher goes
beyond what is required by the law, he/she
faces the proper consequences.
What did I learn from her response?
