This document discusses plans and considerations for filming a music video to promote a new album by the band Lower Than Atlantis. It emphasizes the importance of close-up shots of the lead singer and drummer to engage the audience. 2. CLOSE UPS AND EXTREME CLOSE UP’S ARE REALLY IMPORTANT AS THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL MUSIC VIDEO
FOR THE RELEASE OF A NEW ALBUM. I WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE PLENTY OF CLOSE UPS OF OUR
LEAD SINGER IN THE PERFORMANCE SHOTS. THIS WILL ALLOW THE TA TO RELATE TO HIM [ BLUMLER &
KATZ SUGGEST THAT VIEWERS CONSUME TEXTS TO RELATE TO THE ISSUES OR STAR] IT WILL ALSO
ALLOW THE AUDIENCE THE CHANCE TO GET TO KNOW HIM MORE.
3. THE DRUMMER IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT. ONE OF THE CONVENTIONS ACCORDING TO GOODWIN IS THAT
MUSIC IS EDITED ON THE BEAT. IF WE HAVE MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE SHOTS OF THE DRUMMER THEN WE
WILL BE ABLE TO DO THIS MORE EFFECTIVELY. I WOULD LIKE TO PAN FROM THE DRUMMER TO THE
GUITARIST IN ORDER TO SHOW MORE DETAIL HOWEVER I AM AWARE WE NEED PLENTY OF FAST CUTS.
4. LIGHTING AND EXTREME CLOSE UP – THIS IS EFFECTIVE AS THE LIGHT COMES FROM BEHIND HIM. HE HAS
A VERY NATURAL STAR IMAGE AND ALTHOUGH DYER SUGGESTS THAT “A STAR IS AN IMAGE NOT A REAL
PERSON’ I WANT TO KEEP A NATURAL LOOK FOR OUR GROUP. I DON’T WANT TO CREATE ANYTHING THAT
LOOKS MANUFACTURED AND YOUNG TEEN. IT WOULDN’T SUIT OUR BAND AT ALL AND I THINK WE CAN
STILL CREATE AN ATTRACTIVE STAR IMAGE THROUGH FACIAL EXPRESSION AND MOVEMENT.
5. CLOSE UP OF THE DRUM STICKS – THIS WORKS WELL AND IS CENTRE FRAMED. THIS WOULD BE
GREAT IF WE CAN GET IT AND SYNCH IT CORRECTLY.
6. LIGHTING IS WELL USED HERE AGAIN. WE HAVE BEEN OFFERED THE USE OF A BARN AND AN OUTSIDE
AREA. WE PLAN TO USE CAR HEADLIGHTS AND CREATE A GRUNGY LOOK. LOCATIONS NEED TO BE VARIED
AND WE WANT TO KEEP IT RURAL AND MIX TOGETHER BINARY OPPOSITIONS - LIGHT AND DARK – DAY AND
NIGHT. THIS SHOULD WORK WITH THE IDEA OF THE GIRL EMILY BRINGING TROUBLE AND JOY. WE CAN USE
ALL EXTERIOR SHOTS [ EXCEPT THE BARN] AND I THINK THIS WILL GIVE OUR MUSIC VIDEO A
NATURALISTIC TONE. THE RELATIONSHIP IS IMPORTANT IN THE NARRATIVE AND WE WANT TO ENSURE
MEANING IS MADE CLEAR.
7. EXTREME CLOSE UP AND EXPRESSION . MISE EN SCENE: I LIKE THE FRAMING AND THE CAPTURE
OF HIS FACIAL EXPRESSION IN THIS SHOT. I WANT TO DO THIS WITH AS MANY BAND MEMBERS AS
POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP THE IDEA THAT THE GIRL IS CREATING TROUBLE. FRAMING IS KEY AND I
WANT TO STORYBOARD A RANGE OF SHOTS SO WE CAN SELECT THE BEST IN POST PRODUCTION.

9. LOCATION SHOT – THIS INTERIOR SHOT ON A TRAIN MATCHES THE LYRICS WELL. I WOULD LOVE TO
USE EXCITING LOCATIONS LIKE THIS HOWEVER WE WILL NOT BE GIVEN PERMISSION TO DO SO ON
GROUNDS OF HEALTH AND SAFETY. HOWEVER, WE CAN USE SAFE LOCATIONS THAT BELONG TO
OUR FAMILY. THE ONE WE MUST DO A RISK ASSESSMENT FOR WILL BE ON THE STREET.
10. PROPS – SET DESIGN: PROPS NEED TO MATCH THE LYRICS [GOODWIN] WE WILL ANALYZE OUR
LYRICS IN DETAIL AND THE ONE THAT SPRINGS TO MIND IS A CLOCK. WE NEED TO ENSURE THAT
THE SET DESIGN IS UNCLUTTERED AND FOCUSED ON THE CLOCK. OUR GROUP WILL MEET TO
DISCUSS POSSIBLE PROPS THAT WE COULD USE. THIS WILL NEED TO GO IN OUR ORGANIZATION
AND PLANNING.
