1. How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
2. The social groups my magazine targets is middle class people. This is because the
content of my magazine does not contain too much writing that only higher class
people would want to read. My magazine does not contain too little writing
either than lower class people would expect to have. Also the price of my
magazine is not overpriced for middle class people.
The clothes that the group on the front cover are wearing represent different
social groups. There are 3 different stereotypes represented on my front cover.
Two of the males represent casual clothing, one represents indie clothing and
one represents a rock look.
In my magazine, I am representing generally white middle class. These are
represented through my magazine as all of my models are white. In my
magazine, the type of text I have used is not slang but not too posh either so
middle class people can relate to the type of text and wording used. In the
interview on my double page, I have used informal language so it looks more in
interview style.
3. Social Class
The Common Three-Stratum
Model
Upper Class
The upper class is the social class composed of those who are wealthy, well-born,
or both. They usually wield the greatest political power. In some countries, wealth
alone is sufficient to allow entry into the upper class. This is people such as big
business owners and doctors/dentists
Middle Class
The middle class are the most contested of the three categorizations, the broad
group of people in contemporary society who fall socio-economically between the
lower class and upper class. This is people such as teachers, nurses and business
managers.
Lower Class
Lower class (occasionally described as working class) are those employed in low-
paying wage jobs with very little economic security. This is people such as shelf
stackers, young mothers and students.
