Congressman Peter Welch responded to a constituent's concerns about proposed spending cuts in the fiscal year 2011 federal budget. While recognizing the need to reduce the federal deficit, Welch voted against a Republican proposal that disproportionately cut programs for working families, women, seniors and vulnerable groups. The bill also left defense spending and corporate tax loopholes largely untouched. Welch believes any deficit reduction measures must not disproportionately impact low-income Americans and must address spending across the board, including defense and entitlements. He thanked the constituent for contacting him and invited further communication.
