- II. Phonetic Buildup Introduce the letter of the day and teach how to produce the Aa sound. “This is the letter A (ey)”. Have the student say “letter A”. It’s important to distinguish between the letter A which is pronounced as “ey” and the sound of A which is “aah” Move on to producing the sound of “A” “The sound of A is aaah” (pronounce as American “a”). To make it fun, exaggerate the sound, with your tongue slightly sticking out. “Repeat after me. Aaaahhh!!!” Let the student practice a few times. “Let’s practice!” “Aaah, Aaah, Apple!” Let the student mimic you “Aaah, Aaah, Ant!” “Aaah, Aaah, Alligator!” Don’t force the student to perfect saying “alligator”. Focus on the production of the “aaah” sound.
- III. Letter Sound Recognition Drill and Writing Drill 1. Introduce the letters. Point at each letter while you say their names. T: “This is the big letter A, and this is the small letter A. Big A, small A.” 2. Let the student say “Big A” and “small A” 3. Demonstrate how to write the letters. T: “This is how you write Big A. One, two, three” Demonstrate how to write Big A on the screen slowly. Then have the student write the Big A on the space provided. T: “This is how you write small A! One….. Two! ” Demonstrate how to write small A on the screen slowly. 4. Identify the pictures with the student. Ask the student to say the name twice. 5. Let the student practice writing the letter A below the picture. T: “Apple. Write small A”. “Ant. Write small A.” “Alex. Write big A”… so on
- IV. Letter Sound Recognition Check and Writing Check 1. Let the student identify which of the following pictures start with Aa sound. If it starts with Aah sound, then student will write the letter “A” 2. Identify the pictures one by one, slowly. “A-Ant. Is this aaah?” “Buh-Ball. Is this aaah?” “A-Apple. Is this aah?” Make sure you give plenty of praise when the student gets it right. words: 1st column: ant, ball, apple 2nd column: ax, Alex, banana Note: Tell the student that when you write a person’s name the first letter should be written in big letter.
- V. Literature Appreciation Student is not expected to read the words on his own. Teacher will read first and then guide the student. Read one sentence. “This is an apple.” Read 2-3 words then have the student read after you. T: “This is…“ S: “This is..” T: “an apple” S: “an apple” T: “This is an apple.” S: “This is an apple.” 3. Phrasing: It is big/and red. This is/an ant. It small. This is/Alex. He is/a small boy. Remember to read slowly while pointing to the words that you are reading. - VI. Sound recognition (review) 1. Ask the student to encircle the pictures that start with Aah sound. Go clockwise, starting with the familiar items apple and ax. Name each picture out loud. Then move on… ambulance, banana, ant, anchor (student may have trouble here), flower, Alex, ball Note that ambulance is also called ambulance in Korean. The pronunciation is slightly different though. If there’s time, go around again and ask the student to name the pictures with the Aah sound. You can help by pointing at the picture.
