This reflective journal discusses the author's experience learning statistics in their 5th semester of an English education major program. They had struggled with statistics since elementary school and found the subject confusing. However, their lecturer helped them understand that statistics can simplify human life rather than burden it. Measures of central tendency in particular helped the author see how statistics can make life easier. This changed their perspective and motivated them to study statistics despite their previous dislike, in order to become a better teacher.

1. Reflective Journal
Who does not know what math, statistics,calculus,etc.In my mind of the three things I know are
counting, multiplication,addition,sharing,surviving,numbers,data,equations, and findingresults.There are
many more.
It makes me confused, now I'm in the 5th semester English languageeducation majors more precisely I
take a languagemajor is to avoid counting,but in factat the firstsemester there is a basic statistics coursethat
makes me confused learn itbecause at the time I was school elementary, junior high school,and high school.The
affirmation in my brain of mathematics is very difficultand dizzy,so at the time the college thought so. I found
some difficulties when I studied the statisticsmyself.First,becauseI do not likesubjects thathave to be counted
likemath, physics,chemistry and others sinceI was in elementary school until high school.Secondly,becausethe
media of this subjectis English.Itmakes me more confused. But I had to change my mind that there was
something I did not likebut what I needed. Now, I must study statistics.
I think studyingthe statisticsis completeuntil the firstsemester but in this 5th semester I re-meet the
course, which I recall statements from my statistician lecturer Mr. Elih Sutisna Yanto,S.Pd., M. Pd. that statistics
that simplify human liferather than burdening human beings.
From that word I initially did notbelieve, becauseI feel that I am burdened with statistics,butthe
passageof time followingthe course littleby littlemy lecturer explains thattrue sciencecertainly makes iteasier
for human life.
Measure of central tendency that makes me agree that sciencewould make it easier for humans,
processingdata to find data,lookingfor average values lookingfor middlevalues etc. At the firstmoment of
studyingwith a heart deeply overwhelmed by dislikewith sciencecertainly mademe always wantto be absent in
the course, but when the thought came at the end of my lecturer said,studyingthe statisticswill beuseful
knowing your students ability,and to pass the thesis you have to understand my dream stats to be a teacher of
coursemy heart is stirred and understand that statistics isan importantelement to be a teacher.
I also buried my bad intentions to skip the course,with a passion even though itwas difficultI continueto study
the statisticscourses in semester 5 is for my college
I studied the Basic Concepts in Statistics.As I said before, I always find ithard to learn statistics.
Teachers of this subjectuse to say that we must remember the term definition keywords. Sometimes I easily
forget the definitions of some terms so I have to read them again.And I often find it difficultto distinguish terms
that have almostthe same names as nominal and ordinal scales becauseI easily forgetthe keywords of the term. I
have to repeat it to read it as often as possibleto remember everything. So, I have to study hard when I want to
remember anythingbecauseI have easy memory getting lost.

2. I learned about Organizingand Graphic Data.I havea littleunderstandingwhen readingitbecause
when I was in the firstsemester I've learned about it. I know how to order scores and look for classintervals.The
statistical differences I learned in the firsthalf and the fifth semester were the interpretation. In the firsthalf I was
justtough how to calculatebut my lecturer said thatnumbers are not given interpretation, they arenot called
data.
I learned about the sizeof the central tendency. I have learned about fashion,median,and mean sinceI
was in junior high.I know a littleabout that. But I do not know why I learned aboutit but itreally is notuseful for
everyday life. I think so becauseas long as I study it, my teacher does not tell me its function. There is a technique
given by my lecturer. If we want to find the average valuewe can use fastway especially if wehave so many values
to count. When I was in the firstsemester I had to add up all thescores manually.Now I know a quick wa y to
calculateit.
I also learned aboutstandard deviation and variance.I can calculatehowto find standard deviation and
variance.But sometimes I forget the formula.Like me before I easily forgeteverything. But there is somethingthat
makes me very happy.I know the standard deviation function and itis very useful for us when we become a
teacher. I always feel more eager to learn if a teacher or lecturer teaches by correlatingbetween matter and real
lifeas I learned about the standard deviation two weeks ago.
