My name is Ebrahim Salasa and I have been in the role of ICT Manager at the Cape Town terminal for the past
8 years. Throughout my tenure the terminal used Psion Teklogix kit and as Mr Ernest Hamaty has worked for
Psion Teklogix in Cape Town I came to meet him in this professional capacity.
Over the years the terminal evolved from the old COSMOS system to the new Navis system and also saw the
Psion Teklogix kit evolve from :
1. Controllers – From 9500 to 9510’s
2. Base Stations – From 9150 to 9160’s
3. HHT’s – From 7030 to 7530 G2’s
4. VMT’s – From 8055 to 8530/8525 G2’s
5. BioMetric VMT integration
Over the years, Ernest was personally involved in assisting us during these various evolutions and I cannot
recall one instance where any of those evolutions or migrations went wrong or did not meet deadlines. This
was largely attributable to the professional manner in which Ernest conducts himself and his commitment to
getting the tasks done.
Ernest has also been pivotal in assisting us with all our narrowband coverage issues including identifying low
signal areas and recommending and installing antennae to address the problems, with the usual positive
outcomes.
Our environment is rugged with huge operational vehicles and cranes, operating 24x7. Over the years Ernest
and team has safely worked in this ‘dangerous’ environment without any safety incident. Besides Transnet’s
relentless drive for safety, it is also Ernest’s experience that has led to this good safety record.
During 2009 we went live with Navis and this required massive‐ planning, ‐installation, ‐configuration and ‐
commissioning tasks, again all led by Ernest and team without any delays on their part.
Last year Ernest was again pivotal in the deployment of the first bio‐metric VMT’s against Navis globally, again
with almost no disruption to operations.
I have no hesitation in supplying Ernest with this reference letter as I believe his product knowledge is
invaluable and he has been a huge asset to us in the terminal over the years.
