Clem worked on a large property in Constantia of which I was the owner’s representative.
At the stage at which Clem took on the project, the garden was established but overgrown,
unkempt and desperately waterlogged. His mandate was to create something altogether
more sophisticated and elegant, with privacy for the cottage located in the grounds.
Clem’s first approach was to create drainage, the efficacy of which has been proven during
the heavy downpours this year. He also went to some trouble to clear neighbouring land, in
order to help drain the land for which he was responsible.
Clem was firmly in favour of cutting down some trees to which the owner was initially
resistant. However, Clem got his way and the garden was dramatically improved as a result
in terms of views and light.
He was also responsible for the creation of large swathes of beds which had hitherto been
lawn. The beds gave the garden a much softer feel, without encroaching on the feeling of
space, and created a defined garden space for the cottage without blocking the view from the
main house.
Clem also oversaw the creation of two boreholes and the upgrading of the irrigation system.
He created a garden which, when the old owner visited the house recently, made him
exclaim that he wanted to buy the house back immediately.
The vast majority of this was achieved in a period of about 4 months.
I have no hesitation in recommending the services of Clem Pohl. He was a delightful man to
work with.
