I am a lecturer in Computational Biology within the School of Computing Sciences at the University of East Anglia. I was the supervisor of Dominic during his final year undergraduate project for the 2010/11 academic year. His project, titled ‘Using L-Systems to Simulate the Romanesco Broccoli’, used computational modelling techniques combined with biological insight to create a realistic representation of complex plant organs. This required a significant amount of academic research into the current state-of-the-art in both computational and biological techniques as well as strong technical skills to implement the model in appropriate computing environments. Specifically Dominic gained excellent experience of Java, Processing and Python as well as ray-tracing packages such as POV-Ray and Blender. This was an extremely challenging, multi-disciplinary project that Dominic was able to successfully accomplish with minimal supervision. As well as having strong technical skills his written and verbal communication skills are excellent and he has been a pleasure to work with.
