Traditional application delivery is broken and cannot keep up with demands of the digital age. However, Low-code Platforms are emerging as key enablers to innovation by simplifying the development and deployment of custom enterprise apps.
Building a Digital Enterprise: learning from experience V2Asanka Abeysinghe
Digital transformation, digital enterprise and connected business; what does this all mean for each industry vertical? How does one innovate in critical strategies? What does the reference architecture look like for a small, medium or larger enterprise? How does an organization implement such an architecture?
As an avid technology partner, WSO2 has helped many organisations in their journey to build the right digital enterprise capabilities that create better customer and internal user experiences. This session will answer the above questions and share our own experience from successful projects.
The Role of Integration in Microservice Architecture (MSA)Asanka Abeysinghe
Integration was treated as old-school technology when microservice architecture (MSA) was introduced. However, when theory became practice, the technologist who designed and implemented MSA identified the important role integration plays in this modern architecture paradigm. An architecture layer that connects many microservices and builds composite services, requests dispatching and service routing, connects microservices with legacy services and cloud providers are among common integration use cases across most enterprises.
During this session, Asanka will discuss how integration fits into MSA and technologies that can be used to implement integration microservices.
Pragmatic approach to Microservice Architecture: Role of MiddlewareAsanka Abeysinghe
Microservice Architecture (MSA) is emerging as a popular architecture pattern in today’s agile enterprise. Its iterative architecture and development methodologies are particularly attracting the interest of architects who need continuous delivery to fulfil business needs.
But, is every characteristics of MSA new or even pragmatic? Asanka Abeysinghe, vice president of solutions architecture at WSO2, will provide insights into MSA requirements from real-world examples and provide details of an architect friendly pragmatic approach for this architecture pattern.
Middleware plays a key role in successful MSA-based implementations. Using the correct middleware capabilities enable enterprises to fully leverage advantages provided by MSA, and ensures ease of implementation and faster time to market.
Asanka will explain essential middleware capabilities required to resolve the MSA puzzle, where you can also utilize supportive technologies such as Continuous Integration (CI), containerization and Container as a Service (CaaS).
Seamless integration of people, devices and systems is the fundamental of Digital Transformation that enables a digital experience for external and internal consumers.
APIs make connectivity simple, faster, standardized, and secure. As a result, APIs are everywhere in a successful digital enterprise. During this session, Asanka will take you through an architecture journey, which defines a reference architecture for an API-driven digital enterprise, as well as lessons on building an effective API program for your organization. In addition, Asanka will share some technical and non-technical best practices gathered while implementing similar solutions.
Barriers to entry are collapsing as digital startups come out of nowhere to disrupt entire industries. In this session we will discuss the capabilities you need to deliver business innovation through software to market faster than your competitors.
Speaker: Faiz Parkar, Director EMEA GTM, Pivotal
Success of a Connected Business depends on robust architecture that will reuse the existing IT assets and fill the gaps by introducing required architecture layers. Having a iterative approach with a milestone plan helps to overcome the technical and non-technical challenges businesses face during implementation. Middleware and Next-Gen Middleware are the raw materials to build an integrated, secured, monitored and governed Connected Business.
Teams using IaaS and traditional application servers to deploy cloud applications benefit on-demand efficiencies, but continue to spend significant effort on application delivery, including deployment, scaling, and governance. PaaS solutions have helped automate some functions, but still falls short. Examining how to address these challenges with a PaaS, this session will also review the architectural approach of the WSO2 Private PaaS to be cloud native, providing polyglot language and environment support, and ability to run on multiple runtimes.

Data to Consumer : end to end middleware capabilitiesAsanka Abeysinghe
Consumer-driven and rapidly changing business requirements are creating the need to go beyond traditional middleware in enterprises today. Because the middleware layer has enough functional capabilities it empowers architects to convert their blueprints to solutions without changing the architecture to fit into the middleware limitations.
Asanka will first look at the evolution of middleware and how current and next-generation middleware looks like (Platform-3.0). Following this, he will analyze the middleware requirements from data (system of record) to consumer (system of engagement) by illustrating a layered architecture of modern enterprise middleware.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

49. Architecture: PaaS/IaaS
• The platform uses OpenShift 3 as a PaaS layer
• This can be deployed on
• Bare metal
• Raw VMs
• Local private cloud
• Public cloud
• The physical deployment provides the baseline
• incoming networking/routing (diagram focuses on client app routing)
50. Architecture:
Summary
The Core MAP is hosted in set of
• RHEL-based containers on the PaaS
• These provide core functionality
• used by all apps and services
• Developers/Admin Users access the
Core MAP via a browser,
• via command line tooling,
• and via git push (for code)
51. Architecture: MBaaS
The Mobile Backend-as-a-Service
provides a set of “environments”
to match the lifecycle, e.g. dev,
• test and prod
• Each server-side “Cloud App” is
• made up of Node.js code,
caching,
• and MongoDB JSON DB storage
52. Architecture: MBaaS Drill Down
Within a Cloud,
App Pods can be
• scaled horizontally.
• Shared services can
• also be deployed
• that are used by
• more than one
Cloud
• App.
• MBaaS Services are
• one example of
this.
53. Architecture: Client
Apps
Client Apps are routed into the MBaaS
• to link to their relevant “Cloud App”
• The platform can dynamically bind
• Client Apps to new “Cloud Apps”
• in the same project
• The client SDKs manage complex tasks
• such as data sync, queuing requests
• when offline
• Limited communications to Core MAP
64. Consumer Apps (B2C)
• Travel
• Retail
• Banking
• Business Services
• Customer service
Employee Apps (B2E)
• Workforce
Scheduling
• Sales team support
• HR self-service
• Expenses
Business Apps (B2B)

71. Analyst Quotes
“38 percent of total IT spending is outside of the formal IT organization already,
with a disproportionate amount in digital. By 2017, this number will grow to more
than 50%.
Gartner, Drive Digital Business with Insights from Symposium, Nov 2014
"The number of enterprise applications optimized for mobility will quadruple by
2016, driven both by competitive necessity and rapidly evolving technologies that
support faster and more secure enterprise 'appification'. The benefits from
efficiencies and business innovation on the back of this app explosion will transform
industries and markets. At the same time it is clear that the path to broader
mobilization of business processes is still complex.
John Jackson, Program Vice President for Mobility Research at IDC.
