Developing International Standards for Youth Sports through the Collaboration...
Everyone has some value to add, however recognizing this value can often be challenging as we become attached to our programs and develop connotations about other programs. As a field we are stronger together then we are apart therefore developing a holistic approach in sport and development programs means recognizing the values of others and the importance of working together.
The concept for the Game On! initiative was created by a group of 40 professionals from 20 different countries and harnessed by the International Alliance for Youth Sports. It was not by chance that the Game On! program has been able to impact the lives of more then 350,000 children in developing countries around the world, it is through the power of committed partners who are willing to put aside political differences for the benefit of creating a program for children and communities.
One of the challenges of working in alliances is agreeing on and creating standards. In 2009 the IAYS released the first edition of the International Standards for Youth Sports. These standards were developed to be used by every youth sports program, and the IAYS along with our partners have taken a leadership role to assimilate and share the best practices.
These standards have been assessed by a large group of youth sports coordinators from around the globe and have been adapted from the US National Standards for Youth Sports compiled by the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). These standards reflect the consensus of this group and address a variety of topics that currently affect the delivery of youth sports programming around the world.
The purpose of these standards is to provide a framework by which youth sports programs are designed and executed. The International Standards for Youth Sports place in motion a policy for youth sports.
Sports in a Child’s Life
Sports can positively impact students in 3 key ways:
1) Sports teach students important life skills like teamwork, leadership, communication and respecting rules which increases confidence and prepares them for success in school and life.
2) There are values learned from team sports like shared goals, individual responsibility, managing challenges, and cooperation that can be applied to student-teacher relationships and learning.
3) Research shows sports provide emotional and social benefits for both boys and girls by offering an outlet for emotions, building mastery and resilience, and helping girls gain more control over their lives.
Meeting needs for special needs
1) Special Olympics is the largest sports organization for people with special needs, with nearly 4 million athletes in over 170 countries. It improves self-confidence and raises awareness of what people with special needs can achieve.
2) Organization of Special Needs Families was founded 10 years ago by parents hoping to find new activities for their special needs child. It now offers afterschool and summer camp programs.
3) Angels with Special Needs focuses on helping severely disabled youth feel included through activities like arts, sports, and field trips. It provides funding for special needs students to go on field trips.

Maidan Summit 2011 - Betty Augustine, Dream a Dream Foundation
In her presentation at Maidan Summit 2011, Ms Betty Augustine introduced her organisation, Dream a Dream, and shared the model on which it works with vulnerable children on developing their life skills through sport. She shared how communities could be sensitized through simple activities like active volunteering and a football.
She presented a case study of a participant, and explained how through sport develops the ability to take initiatives, overcome difficulties, interact with one another and follow instructions. The story of 17-year-old Girish on the programme, who started playing football at the age of 14 and eventually became a national level player for homeless people, was shared as a case in point.
Conference presentation Ritchie Wilson
Ritchie Wilson, the presenter, has worked for the Scottish FA for many years in various coaching roles. The workshop will cover long term player development, its impact on coach education, and developing players through fun ("child's play"). Long term player development focuses on doing activities at the right developmental stage for each player. Coach education levels in Scotland are designed to match players' stages of development. Developing players requires making activities enjoyable while also providing structure, repetition, and encouragement to help players improve and work towards their goals.
