What are the elements of art?
• Line - an identifiable path created by a point
moving in space.
• Shape - is a close line.
• Form - often used when referring to physical
works of art with three dimensional
works.
• Space - refer to the artist’s used of the area with
the picture plane.
What are the elements of art?
• Color - is an element consisting of hues, of
which there are three properties; hue,
chroma or intensity, and value.
• Value - describes the darkness of color.
• Texture - describe the surface quality of the
work, referencing the type of lines the
artist created.

What is Art Criticism?
Art criticism is the
discussion or evaluation
of visual art. Art critics
usually criticize art in the
context of aesthetics or
the theory of beauty.
Description
• It answers the question,
“What do you see?”
• Pure description of the
object without value
judgments (Elements of Art)
Analyses
• It answers the question,
“How did the artist do it?”
• Determining what the
features suggest and
deciding why the artist used
such features to convey
specific ideas.
Interpretation
• It answer the question,
“What is the artist trying
to say? What is going on
in the picture?”
Evaluation
• What do I think about this
artwork? How do I feel about
whether the artist was
successful in conveying an idea?
• Based upon what you have
observed already, give your
opinion of the artwork. You
MUST give reason.

Group Activity
In your small group, look for a painting
in the internet and apply the 4 steps in art
criticism in understanding visual art.
Afterwards, each group will present their
work in class.
Asynch Task # 6
Each group will make and prepare the assigned
topic for their report. Every group must prepare a
PowerPoint presentation and interactive activity to
have a lively discussion. In the same way, each
group should come up with their own masterpiece
based on their assigned topic as their academic
output by merely observing the OBE standard of
education.
